Communication (market of Austria)

2020: are sold out by a 5G frequency in Austria for pennies

On September 14 RTR announced regulatory body of Austria completion of distribution of frequencies in the ranges of 700 MHz, 1500 MHz and 2100 MHz at an auction, devoted to a 5G. Net proceeds from an auction were 201.87 million euros.

It is known that the Magenta Telekom company spent 86.7 million euros for 90 MHz, A1 spent 65.5 million euros for 80 MHz, and Hutchison Drei Austria paid 49.5 million euros for 90 MHz.

It is supposed that in total 1702 of 2100 regions which it is bad or are not supplied with telecommunication services at all, will get access to mobile broadband communication by 2027 according to the obligations attached to new licenses to use of a range. Magenta Telekom will supply 615 localities, Hutchison Drei - 739 and A1 - 349.

Are sold out by a 5G frequency in Austria for pennies at an auction

In total T-Mobile Austria (Magenta) won 2x20 MHz from a range 700 MHz, 20 MHz from the range of 1500 MHz plus 10 MHz and also 2x15 MHz from a range 2100 MHz. A1 which began commercial start of services of a 5G in January, 2020 did not win in the range of 700 MHz, however the company got 30 MHz in the range of 1500 MHz and 2x25 MHz in the range of 2100 MHz. Hutchison Drei Austria received 2x10 MHz in the range of 700 MHz, 30 MHz in the range of 1500 MHz and 2x20 MHz in the range of 2100 MHz.

Frequencies in the range of 700 MHz are intended, as a rule, for a covering of large territories. Acquisition of these frequencies was directly connected with inefficiency of use of frequencies in a range 900 MHz in certain regions. The Austrian regulator created a bonus system that bidders could buy frequencies at a discount if they undertake the obligation for providing an additional mobile covering. RTR reported that through a bonus system 802 more localities will be provided with mobile broadband communication.[1]
