Thousands laid off due to lack of money

In mid-August 2024, it became known that the automaker Stellantis plans to lay off up to 2,450 employees working in factories in the United States. The layoffs are related to the discontinuation of the Ram 1500 Classic, an old version of a popular pickup truck manufactured at a factory in Warren, near Detroit. Since the introduction of the new generation Ram 1500 in 2018, the model has largely served as a budget option for entry-level buyers and fleet owners.

The decision to end production of the Ram 1500 Classic was not a complete surprise given that the company is actively developing an updated Ram 1500 model for release in 2025. Although production at the Warren plant will cease, work at the nearby facility where the newer model, the Ram 1500, is being produced will continue without interruption.

The business closures will add to fears that the region faces a protracted downturn after lagging behind rivals.

However, the closure of production lines and large-scale layoffs have raised concerns among local authorities, workers and the United Auto Workers (UAW) union representing workers at the plant. Layoffs are expected to begin as early as October, but the final number of job cuts could be below what was announced if the company manages to move some employees to other positions.

UAW President Sean Fine criticized the management of Stellantis, in particular CEO Carlos Tavares, for the decision to close the production site. Fine noted that where Tavares received a 56% salary premium, thousands of auto plant workers will lose their jobs and livelihoods.

The decision is known to have become part of a broader strategy to cut costs for the Tavares-led company. The layoffs at the Warren plant followed a series of production cuts at other Stellantis facilities. All this is part of the Dare Forward 2030 plan, which should double the company's revenue to $325 billion by 2030.[1]

Citroen cars use defective airbags that kill drivers and passengers

In early June 2024, Citroen recalled more than 600,000 C3 and DS3 cars for repairs due to problems with defective airbags. The company says the issues relate exclusively to models released between 2009 and 2019 that are no longer commercially available.

According to the manufacturer, 605,772 vehicles in more than 20 countries in Southern Europe, the Middle East and North Africa will be inspected and repaired as part of this initiative. It is known that 497 thousand Citroen C3 cars and 108 thousand Citroen DS3 models suffered from marriage. The reason was the "deterioration over the years of the quality of gas" used in the airbags of the manufacturer Takata.

During decay, this gas affects various components of the airbag, as a result of which, in the event of an accident, activation of the airbags can lead to the release of decay products or small parts that can lead to injury to the driver or passengers, the company representative said.
File:Aquote2.png

According to a product recall notice published on May 3, 2024 on the French website Rappel Conso, "propellant (gas) in the airbags of the driver and passenger can deteriorate over time. In the event of an accident, when the airbags are activated, they can burst with great force, injuring the passengers of the car. " There are cases when drivers and passengers died because of these airbags.

Citroen has already sent car recall notices to owners of affected models who are offered to register online on the company's website to contact its representatives and plan repairs at a special dealership.

It is known that the problem of dangerous airbags affected not only Citroen: the Spanish brand SEAT was also forced to recall several models for planned repairs, as was BMW, which recalled more than 20,000 cars.[2]

Firing hundreds of programmers to save money

On March 22, 2024, car manufacturer Stellantis (brands Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Citroen, Dodge, DS, Fiat, Jeep, Maserati, Opel, Peugeot, etc.) announced a reorganization aimed at reducing costs and improving the financial situation. As part of this program, hundreds of employees in various departments will be laid off.

In particular, in the United States, Stellantis Corporation will reduce approximately 400 people who work in engineering, technology and software groups. This represents about 2% of the total headcount of these units. As of the end of 2023, Stellantis had approximately 11,800 employees. The decision on the layoffs is said to have been made "after a thorough organizational review."

As the automotive industry continues to face unprecedented uncertainty and increased competitive pressure globally, Stellantis is implementing appropriate structural changes to improve efficiency and optimize costs, the corporation said in a statement.

However, on March 27, 2024, Stellantis signed additional agreements with Italian trade unions on voluntary layoffs of its employees in this country. The cuts could affect workers at businesses in Melfi, Pomigliano D'Arco, Mirafiori and Termoli. In total, in Italy, the staff of Stellantis can be reduced by more than 3,000 people. In this country, the company employs about 43 thousand people, including about 15 thousand in the Turin region. Stellantis notes that the cuts are partly due to the introduction of new technologies, including the transition to cleaner energy. It is emphasized that these layoffs are carried out exclusively on a voluntary basis and are mainly aimed at employees close to retirement age or wishing to take advantage of new professional opportunities.[3]
