The Intel company announced plans of creation of the version of the MeeGo operating system for desktop PCs and notebooks. Earlier it was supposed that MeeGo is intended only for netbooks and smartphones. Adaptation of MeeGo for full-screen devices is necessary in order that eventually all these gadgets could interact easily with each other.

Intel prepares release of the MeeGo operating system based on Linux for notebooks and personal computers. It current week was said by representatives of the company. The producer of chips already released the first version of MeeGo for developers at the end of March. At the same time one edition of a system intended for the netbooks managed by the Intel processors Atom, and another – for the N900 Nokia smartphones.

Now, in addition to netbooks and smartphones, the company will also develop OS for the PC based on the Intel processors Atom, the vice president of corporation Doug Fisher said during the interview. Besides, he announced that the new version of MeeGo for dekstop will also work with notebooks and the PC under control of the Intel processors Core. However, he did not designate expected date of an exit of MeeGo for desktop computers.

Nevertheless, the main focus in system development, according to Fischer, after all will be made on creation of versions of MeeGo for netbooks, smartphones and such devices as TV and set-top-box. MeeGo release for handheld devices is planned for October, for netbooks – on the second half of this year. Many producers of notebooks, including Asustek Computer and Acer, already expressed support to MeeGo. Besides, Intel does not leave work on a new form factor of the mobile devices "tablet". According to Fischer, for them MeeGo OS will be also adapted.

Such quantity different versions is necessary so far as user interfaces of different types of devices differ from each other. The main difference consists in the sizes of screens and processors, Fischer said. For example, the version of MeeGo for smartphones will be adapted for rather small screens of devices whereas the version for desktops - on the contrary, for big monitors. In smartphones different processors can be also used, today most of them works on Arm processors. In addition to this OS technology for smarfton will work with Moorestown chips which also should will appear in the market shortly.

Let's remind that MeeGo OS is crossing of such products as Moblin from Intel and Maemo from Nokia Corporation. As MeeGo is based on Linux, its creation supervises Linux Foundation, and Intel and Nokia, in turn, put resources in creation of the software product.

According to Fischer, the main of the tasks set during creation of MeeGo OS consists in allowing all devices based on Intel processors easy to interact with each other. Now in different classes of devices different types of operating systems are used. Besides, MeeGo consolidates a landscape of the products open source which is at the moment very fragmentary, Fischer said.

Today for smarfton and netbooks there is a set of systems based on Linux today. In particular, Google develops Chrome OS for netbooks and released Android OS for smartphones and "tablets". Canonical also develops the version of the Ubuntu OS for netbooks. At this Ubuntu and Google are in partnership, and Intel as the producer of processors will compete first of all with producers of Arm processors.

The main goal of Intel consists not in delivering MeeGo on the maximum number of end devices, and in that being convinced that the majority of devices works with architecture of Intel, the vice president of corporation said.
