2020: The announcement of Microsoft Pivot - the device which imitates touch to objects in VR
At the end of October, 2020 the Microsoft company provided the VR device under the name Pivot which imitates touch to objects in virtual reality. The gadget fastens to a wrist and is the hinge with the small motor and the tactile handle. When the VR tracker fixes that the hand of the person should adjoin to a virtual object, the handle moves to a palm with the necessary force imitating the weight of a subject and speed of its falling.
Using Pivot virtual objects can be taken in hand, to catch and throw and also to move in virtual space. When the hand is at distance of 30 cm from an object, Pivot moves the hinge on starting position, and at distance of 10 cm the handle begins to move in proportion to the motion speed of a hand and at the right time it appears in a palm. Two Pivot controllers can work in pair to imitate keeping of large objects two hands.
As noted in Microsoft, unlike the existing tactile controllers which should be held constantly in hand, and gloves, Pivot leaves a palm of the user free when it is not used. Thus, the user can print, for example, on the keyboard and interact with other objects of the real world, and at the right time activate Pivot one movement of a hand. It can be useful in interaction with the mixed or augmented reality.
When testing the device users estimated realness of capture and release of objects of a different form and the size an average score at 5.19 points on 7 to a mark scale. Also it was offered to them to estimate an opportunity to catch and throw balls diversely with a different speed, realness of this action they estimated on 5.5 points. Also users estimated the accuracy of comparative weight of objects at 87% at a step to 0.1 kg.[1]
