2019: Gear VR development termination

On August 8, 2019 it became known of lack of compatibility of Gear VR with the flagman Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy Note 10+ smartphones. Actually it means the termination of development of the headset of virtual reality by Samsung company.

In 2018 when there was Galaxy Note 9, the South Korean producer released the special USB-C adapter providing connection of the smartphone to Gear VR.  In a case did not happen to a line of Note 10 of it, the analyst of Moor Insights & Strategy Anshel Sag after the conversation with representatives of Samsung reported.

Later in the company confirmed that  Gear VR  is incompatible with    Galaxy Note 10 and Note 10+. At this Samsung she does not intend to stop being engaged in such technologies.

We are still betrayed to case of innovations in the field of virtual and augmented reality for providing tremendous new impressions to our clients — said in Samsung to the Engadget portal.

As notes the SiliconANGLE edition, the latests version of Gear VR were released in August, 2016 and February of the 2017th, and since then nothing was heard about the headset from the producer.

According to analysts of Strategy Analytics, the amount of the world market of the VR equipment in 2018 was cut by half because of the flat demand on cheap headsets, like Gear VR which have no own displays and therefore for an output of images it is necessary to connect smartphones to them.

Samsung not the only company which refuses to develop such "screenless" VR gadgets. So, Google did not implement support of the Cardboard headset in the new smartphones and also ceased to support the Daydream VR platform.^[1]

2017: The updated Gear VR headset with the controller from Oculus

The Samsung Electronics company provided in February, 2017 updating of Gear VR with the controller from Oculus. It is the first set for virtual reality of Gear VR from Samsung equipped with the controller for more convenient navigation and management of games. The model expands an ecosystem of virtual reality of Samsung, simplifying users access to virtual entertainments.

For convenient management of games the controller has ergonomic design, supports management of one hand and will recognize even small movements of the user. Besides, the controller provides to players: recognition of different gestures on the touchpad — the touchpad allows to select quickly the most convenient method of interaction, including the indication of a point, drag and drop, turn and a throw, and the stylized trigger will become additional benefit in an action games; a minimum of movements — buttons "home", "volume" and "back", conveniently located on the controller, will help to move easily and quickly in the menu, without distracting from game process; reliable fastening for the most active games — thanks to a convenient thong the controller is reliably fixed in a hand for safe use even at the most active and fascinating scenarios.

Gear VR glasses with the controller are equipped with lenses with focal distance of 42 mm and a point of view 101 ⁰ from the correction improved by technology, designed to minimize effect of a motion sickness. The device supports the micro USB and USB Type-C interfaces. Samsung Gear VR glasses are compatible to the Galaxy S7, S7 edge, Note5, S6 edge+, S6 and S6 edge smartphones.
