2021: Plans construction of the communication line to Anadyr and and Peveka

MegaFon and the government of Chukotka Autonomous Okrug agreed about cooperation within the Arctic Connect project providing construction of the underwater communication line from Europe to Asia. MegaFon reported on February 5, 2021 that it is going to construct branches to Anadyr, the administrative center of Chukotka, and Pevek, the most northern city of Russia.

The agreement on cooperation is signed by the CEO of Megafon Gevork Vermishyan and the governor of Chukotka Autonomous Okrug Roman Kopin. It is directed to interaction when building branches to localities and collaboration in implementation of the innovation digital services and solutions. The government of the region will give to the project coordination and administrative support.

Owing to the geographic location Chukotka is the only Russian region in which communication is performed via satellites for February, 2021. Branches to Anadyr and Pevek will allow inhabitants and the enterprises to receive perfectly other communication quality, including the high-speed Internet. MegaFon develops own IT infrastructure in the region, expands LTE network: in 2020 15 objects of communication supporting this standard were started. In plans of Megafon – further development of digital infrastructure and expansion of a scope by a high-quality modern communication of localities of the region.

We already have an experience of interaction with the government of Chukotka Autonomous Okrug. In 2020 we signed the agreement which allowed to increase three times the capacity of satellite channels in eight localities. Thanks to it inhabitants of Chukotka began to use the mobile Internet at much higher speeds. Connection to Arctic Connect will allow to provide full digitalization of the region that, undoubtedly, will increase quality of life of subscribers and will give additional benefit to district economy, – the CEO of Megafon Gevork Vermishyan notes.

The underwater communication line from Europe to Asia will pass Arctic Connect on a bottom of the Arctic Ocean along the Arctic coast of Russia. It will connect continents on which 85% of the population live, and will provide a fast signal with the minimum level of a delay. Start of Arctic Connect with capacity of 200 Tbits will help to cope with the growing volumes of global traffic. The branches constructed from a base line will allow to provide a high-quality communication to consumers of the Arctic and the Far East, including the enterprises of a toplivnoenergetichesky complex.

In November, 2020 the first stage of sea researches within the project was completed. Observations were made on sections of the route of future communication line in the water area of six seas. The second stage of researches will pass in the summer of 2021 and will include detailed studying of engineering conditions of laying of the submarine cable, including a research of breeds of a bottom. The project passed the environmental assessment of Federal Nature Management Supervision Service which confirmed safety of works.
