At the end of July 2021, Medtronic announced the first gynecological operations using the RAS Hugo robotic surgery system. The new system was successfully used in six procedures, including hysterectomy and myomectomy, conducted at Pacifica Salud Hospital in Panama City (Panama).

Worldwide, more than 60% of hysterectomies are performed in open procedures. The use of a robotic system for minimally invasive surgical operations reduces the number of complications, reduces hospital stay and allows patients to return to normal life faster. The Hugo RAS system is a modular multi-quadrant platform designed for a wide range of soft tissue operations. In June, Medtronic announced that the first clinical operations using the Hugo system took place in Santiago (Chile). This marked the beginning of the creation of the Hugo RAS system patient registry, where clinical data are collected for subsequent system registration and market entry.

The Hugo RAS system complements a portfolio of gynaecological products designed for minimally invasive surgical treatment of various conditions, including abnormal uterine bleeding, uterine myoma and endometrial cancer, the manufacturer said. The Hugo RAS system has not yet been approved by regulators for commercial distribution, since Medtronic should first collect enough data on the successful application of the system in a clinical setting.
