2021: GE Healthcare bought BK Medical for $1.45 billion
On September 23, 2021, GE Healthcare announced the purchase of BK Medical, a company specializing in advanced surgical imaging for $1.45 billion.
BK Medical specializes in intraoperative imaging and surgical navigation, helping physicians visualize the patient's internal body state in real time during surgery. The deal will strengthen GE Healthcare's $3 billion business and help the healthcare giant move beyond preoperative and postoperative diagnostics. BK Medical, which has been working in the field of imaging for 40 years, has a global base of more than 14 thousand customers.
Ultrasound is an integral part of many treatments today, and BK Medical is a strategic and very complementary addition to our growing and profitable ultrasound business. This deal helps GE Healthcare continue to expand the scope of diagnosis to surgical and therapeutic interventions, simplifying decision-making for physicians and weaponizing them with deeper knowledge to provide faster and more personalized care to their patients, which represents another step toward ensuring accurate health, said GE Healthcare President and CEO Kieran Murphy. |
GE Healthcare also noted that they expect BK Medical to grow revenue rapidly through increased margins and rapid growth in free cash flow. The company predicts profit on invested capital until 2027. As part of the deal, BK Medical's Active Imaging platform will be able to attract new customers and enter new global markets.
We are immensely proud of the life-changing organization and technology we created at BK Medical and look forward to our future as part of GE Healthcare. Our mission to help surgeons make important decisions through active imaging is well aligned with GE Healthcare's mission to help physicians make more informed decisions and improve patient outcomes, we look forward to starting this new era, said BK Medical President and CEO Brooks West. |
The transaction is expected to close in 2022 after its consideration by regulators. The deal will promote the expansion of the ultrasound therapy segment of GE Healthcare's medical unit.[1]
