2021: Development of a private cloud on Elbrus for the public sector and business

On October 19, 2021, it became known that Rostelecom"" together MCST with (the creators of the line Elbrusov"") is working on an implementation private cloud using. the Russian processors This was told by the technical director of Rostelecom Information Technology Kirill Pikhtovnikov in a video interview - Pro Youtube Hi-Tech channel. According to him, this is the flagship project of the competence center (Central Committee) opened at Rostelecom in May 2021 to develop programs for Russian iron.

Private cloud is a model that cloud computing involves allocating all available - IT resources to one client. The private cloud infrastructure can be located both inside the customer's territory and outside it - for example, in the processing center () data DPC of the cloud provider.

As specified in Rostelecom, the software platform was called Russian Elbrus Cloud and deployed in the company on its own development and testing stands on Elbrus servers. As operating systems, user environments "Elbrus Linux" from ICST and "Alt Linux" from "BaseALT" are used.

According to the representative of Rostelecom, one of the main tasks facing the platform developers is to implement the possibility of launching several container (virtualized at the operating system level) applications in Elbrus systems at the same time.

Most often, one server is used (on Elbrus processors; - approx. CNews), one DBMS, one solution, "said Pikhtovnikov. - Our development will allow different users to run different solutions in parallel in different containers.

This approach will allow cloud users on Elbrus to make optimal use of computing resources, easily scale and deploy applications in the cloud, just as it does with traditional services deployed on the x86 infrastructure (server processors Intel and). AMD

There is an application, it does not need all the power of the current, for example, top four-processor Elbrus. Our solution will allow you to run applications in containers on such a "large" server with a specific pool of resources. Each such application runs in its own sandbox (an environment isolated from other applications, providing sufficient performance, "Pikhtovnikov explained.

According to the representative of Rostelecom, two product options will be available to customers: a set of software for deploying cloud infrastructure on its own equipment based on Elbrus and a cloud service in which Elbrus can work as with an ordinary virtual data center. The cloud service will be implemented together with the MCST.

The Central Committee has a prototype solution - the cloud is launched at Rostelecom Information Technology and is available to company developers. The finished product will be offered to both state and commercial companies.

According to Pikhtovnikov, on the basis of a joint development with the ICST, it will be possible to build an import-substituted software and hardware stack, including using domestic DBMS. In this context, he mentioned Postgres Professional's Postgres Pro and Rostelecom's own resident in-memory system - Rostelecom Reindexer[1].

As noted in Rostelecom, the Russian Elbrus Cloud is the first example of container virtualizations industrial-level technology for the Elbrus platform.

More and more companies, both private and with state participation, are beginning to switch to domestic technologies. But not everyone is immediately ready to purchase servers on Elbrus processors. The launch of the Russian Elbrus Cloud is an important step for the domestic IT market, which will allow all companies planning to switch to Russian software and migrate finished software to the Elbrus architecture to test the platform. At the same time, we offer qualified support from a team of professionals who really work on this iron, "said Kirill Menshov, senior vice president of information technology at Rostelecom.

"This project is a very big step in promoting the Elbrus platform to meet the real needs of customers. The platform has not been provided with an virtualizations enterprise-class solution for a long time - and now it is. Our technology clouds can successfully work on Elbrus processors of all generations - from "" Elbrus-4C to "" and Elbrus-8SV future serial " processors." Elbrus-16C This is a step forward comparable to the appearance of the first at DPC processors Elbrus, which is located in. Research Institute "Sunrise" It is important that during the creation of the platform from the programmers Rostelecom competence center - real enthusiasts of their business - have fully mastered the architecture of Elbrus processors and can now professionally help other companies "go back to Elbrus." In general, the launch public cloud from Elbrus servers reduces the threshold for entering the ecosystem, simplifies familiarity with the Russian platform. We work closely with Rostelecom specialists and will jointly improve the cloud platform and provide customer support, "said the Deputy General Director for Marketing of ICST JSC. Konstantin Trushkin
