2023: "Aviation SWIFT" is disabled in Russia. What will be the consequences for air travel

In mid-August 2023, it became known about the upcoming shutdown of telecommunications channels owned by the global provider of services for civil aviation, the Swiss company Societe Internationale de Telecommunication Aeronautiqes (SITA). Because of this, domestic and foreign carriers operating flights between Russia and other countries may face difficulties in ensuring such flights.

Due to the shutdown scheduled for the end of September, Russian carriers will no longer be able to transmit data on flights, passengers and luggage through SITA gateways to the information systems of international airports, "one of the sources told RBC, adding that foreign carriers will be left without the usual SITA channel for exchanging data with information systems of Russian airports.

It became known about the upcoming shutdown of SITA telecommunication channels

For international transportation, it is necessary to organize alternative communication channels - for most states to which flights from Russia are carried out, this issue has been resolved, negotiations are ongoing with the rest, the press service of the Ministry of Transport told RBC. Most SITA services in Russia were disabled during 2022, a ministry spokesman added. It is still unclear through which channels information will be exchanged with Chinese airports, RBC sources noted.

The Federal Air Transport Agency said that the change in the data transmission scheme for servicing foreign flights at Russian airports after the departure of the Swiss service provider for civil aviation SITA from Russia does not have a negative impact on aviation

The SITA channel is called "aviation SWIFT." This is the traditional and most common tool in world civil aviation for the exchange of information, for example, between airlines and airports. It has more than 2.5 thousand customers in 200 countries, the provider's solutions are used by over 1 thousand airports, technologies are involved in 90% of all international flights in the world, indicated on the company's website on August 17, 2023.[1]

Getting CarbonNeutral Certificate

On September 9, 2021, SITA announced that it had received CarbonNeutral certification, a milestone in the company's operations. It was possible to achieve the key goal in the field of ecology a year earlier by taking decisive actions to reduce carbon emissions.

SITA reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 48% between 2019 and 2020. A key factor in reducing CO2 emissions was the implementation of the Planet + program, which supports the UN's carbon neutrality goals. These indicators were achieved through initiatives aimed at creating sustainable jobs and business travel. In addition, the company will offset 100% of carbon dioxide emissions that have not been able to be reduced or reduced to zero by funding programs that reduce CO2 emissions. Compensating projects are aimed, among other things, at the development of reforestation, as well as at protecting biodiversity.

Among SITA's actions towards achieving carbon neutrality and formal certification is working with several independent environmental expert companies. To develop an effective program, SITA adhered to the strict CarbonNeutral 1 protocol framework, and to assess the carbon footprint, together with independent environmental consultant RSK Group, the company conducted a comprehensive analysis and measurement of emissions related to airport operations and employee travel. In 2020, SITA analyzed many more factors affecting emissions, including remote state work, which has become a "new reality" during the pandemic. The implementation of the carbon footprint reduction initiative reflects the company's 2018 outlined ambitions to gradually reduce to zero and offset emissions for certification.

Once established as a carbon neutral company, SITA intends to continue to contribute to reducing CO2 emissions. The company is developing technologies that will help customers and representatives of the aviation industry as a whole significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions. Basically, such solutions are related to the optimization of aircraft operation and fuel economy. SITA's merger with Safety Line is designed to grow its development portfolio IT-provider and improve operational efficiency by reducing fuel costs and limiting aircraft CO2 emissions at key flight stages.

We are thrilled to have achieved carbon neutralisation as part of our commitment to sustainable development. I want to thank the employees of the company, whose professionalism and enthusiasm played a decisive role in achieving this most important, ambitious goal a year ahead of schedule. Remaining a reliable partner, we are ready to continue to assist customers and all participants in the air transportation industry by offering our solutions to reduce SO2 emissions and reduce the negative impact on the environment as a whole.
said Barbara Dalibard, CEO of SITA.

Launch with key airline industry partners of MRO Blockchain Alliance research

Key partners in the air business have launched the MRO Blockchain Alliance, a massive study on the use of blockchain technologies to track air routes and flight records aboard aircraft. This was reported on February 4, 20120 by SITA, an IT supplier for the aviation industry.

The alliance includes leading organizations that provide aircraft maintenance at all levels: from manufacturing parts and repairs to organizing logistics and smart contracts; as well as companies providing ongoing and major repairs (MROs). On February 4, members of the alliance, in addition to SITA, are Bolloré Logistics, Cathay Pacific, FLYdocs, HAECO Group, Ramco Systems and Willis Lease Finance Corporation with the support of Clyde & Co. The alliance was first presented in 2019 at an event of the HAECO Group organization. Then the task was announced: to unite stakeholders and develop global standards for the application of blockchain technologies to track the state of aircraft parts.

SITA, together with key airline industry partners, forms MRO Blockchain Alliance

According to SITA, in the coming months the alliance intends to launch a project that will allow it to accumulate experience and record the possibilities of using blockchain to track transactions, aircraft movement and maintenance of spare parts. Such a study will cover a wide range of companies operating in the air business. They will include airlines, landlords, original equipment (OEM) and engine manufacturers, as well as logistics companies and repair service providers.

The information being tracked will be key to managing the complex supply chain of value added. It will help to reach several stakeholders at once during the life of each individual part. As of February 2020, a global database of this type does not exist, data exchange is incomplete, and certain processes are only partially digitized. It is expected that the use of blockchain will simplify and speed up the process of tracking the origin history of aircraft parts, as well as ensure the safe exchange of information between interested representatives of the aviation business.

According to the estimates of the international company in the field consulting and audit, PwC the use of blockchain technologies will increase the revenues of the aerospace industry by 4%, that is, by $40 billion, while reducing MRO costs in the world by about 5%, namely by $3.5 billion.

Savings will come from secure document storage, confidentiality and data protection, transparency of repair and inventory time information, as well as automation of workflows and more efficient on-board logging.

The alliance plans to use blockchain technologies to record and track two separate streams of information: digital parts supply chains and a technical passport for each aircraft. The digital circuit allows you to determine the status of the vessel in real time, track the stages of delivery of assembly units, as well as familiarize yourself with the history of aircraft parts over time. A technical passport can be compared to a person's identity document. It provides accurate identification of aircraft parts and contains important data such as the airworthiness certificate required to confirm ownership.

SITA's role is to manage the alliance and support the working groups. In addition, the company will supply the necessary blockchain technology components that comply with SPEC2000 and SPEC42 standards, as well as ensure proper coordination and verification by aviation supervision and international standardization authorities.

This initiative is part of a large-scale research project by SITA aimed at introducing blockchain. This technology, we believe, makes it possible to optimize the process of data exchange and information recording in the air transport industry. In the airline industry, where all processes are interconnected, it is essential that stakeholders have one common database that provides a single, reliable source of information without the risk of losing control over it. The availability of such a base is fundamental to improving the efficiency and quality of passenger air transportation. This is especially true for the MRO sector.

stated Matthys Serfontein, President of Air Travel Solutions, SITA
File:Aquote2.png

Over the next few months, the alliance will develop a plan that will prove the effectiveness of the concept of applying blockchain technologies in the second quarter of 2020. The MRO Blockchain Alliance is a key element of the Blockchain SITA Global Alliance. It is a global forum dedicated to developing key blockchain-based applications for application in the aviation transport industry, including identification MRO, passengers data and about flights.
