2025: Plan for modernization of aggregation segments and transport network core in Moscow and the region
MTS PJSC will complete by the end of 2025 a large-scale modernization of the aggregation segments and the core of the transport network in Moscow and the region. This will double the bandwidth of the Internet gateway and 1.5 times the bandwidth of the core of the MTS transport network, which will increase the speed of Internet access and improve the quality of communication services for all mobile and fixed-line subscribers in the capital region. The company announced this on March 20, 2025.
MTS began implementing the project in 2024. In addition to expanding the bandwidth of the Internet gateway and the core of the transport network, the company will update aggregation nodes by the end of 2025, which will increase their bandwidth by 50%. As part of the project, due to the modernization of routers, high-speed data transmission channels were organized on the network core to expand the connections of all key sites of the transport network.
The modernization of the core and aggregation segments of the transport network in the capital region is in parallel with the constant expansion of the network of fiber-optic communication lines (FOCL). In 2024, MTS continued to modernize the converged transport network of Moscow and the region, laying 512 kilometers of fiber-optic lines, which is 5% more than in 2023. In 2025, the company plans to lay 526 km of fiber-optic lines.
The presence of branched high-speed FOCL makes it possible to abandon less productive radio relay lines when modernizing the mobile network, since connecting base stations to "optics" increases the speed of mobile Internet for more subscribers. In 2024, MTS accelerated the pace of connection of sites to the transport fiber-optic fiber: the number of base stations connected to the fiber-optic fiber in Moscow increased to 46% from 44.5% a year earlier.
As the consumption of Internet traffic grows, telecom operators are in the permanent process of building transport networks. We are constantly expanding the fiber optic network in the region, laying hundreds of kilometers of fiber annually. In 2024, we took on the basis of the foundations of our infrastructure - expanding the Internet gateway, updating the kernel and aggregation nodes of "transport." The completion of this large-scale and responsible project will create a powerful groundwork for us for many years to come, both in terms of improving the quality of digital services for a growing number of customers, and in terms of preparing our infrastructure for the upcoming transition to the 5G standard, when data transmission and consumption will multiply, - said Vladislav Medvedev, technical director of the Moscow region of MTS. |
2024: Modernization of the transport network along the Black Sea coast
PJSC, a MTS digital ecosystem, has carried out a large-scale modernization of the transport network along the entire Black Sea coast. Krasnodar Territory For over 350 kilometers, MTS has completely updated the transport telecom infrastructure using domestic equipment, which tenfold increased network performance and transmission speed. The data company announced this on December 4, 2024.
In the territories adjacent to the Black Sea coast, the company replaced all transport hubs and completely updated the network management system. Now the throughput of the transport network in the most loaded areas has grown to 400 Gbps. The implementation of the project helped to increase the average subscriber speeds of mobile and fixed networks, minimize breaks in Internet sessions, improve the quality and reliability of services, and corporate clients were able to connect to the fixed Internet at speeds of 25 Gbps and higher.
As a result of the modernization, the speeds of mobile and fixed Internet access in Temryuk, Gelendzhik, Novorossiysk, Sochi, as well as in cities towards the Black Sea resorts: Slavyansk-on-Kuban, Krymsk, Abinsk, increased significantly. In addition, the quality of communication in small coastal villages has noticeably improved: Ashe, Sovetkvaje, Chereshnya, Upper Yurt, Kudepsta, Lower Uchder, Vysokoe and others.
MTS is implementing a large-scale project to modernize transport networks based on domestic equipment in various regions of the country, starting this program from the Southern Federal District. By the end of 2024, we carried out work on the significant and most important territory of the Krasnodar Territory - the Black Sea coast, where the network experiences the greatest and growing loads from year to year due to the influx of tourists. MTS engineers successfully solved the problem - tenfold increased the throughput capacity of the infrastructure, improved its stability and security, creating a reserve for the further development of telecommunication and digital services in the region, - said Viktor Perov, Director of the Department of Regional Transport and Networks of MTS Corporate Clients. |

Testing of XGS-PON fixed Internet technology on the backbone network in Moscow
MTS conducted pre-commercial tests of XGS-PON fixed Internet technology with data transfer rates up to 10 Gbps on its backbone network in Moscow, which is ten times higher than the current home Internet speeds in Russia. Testing of equipment at a communication center in Moscow confirmed the technical readiness of MTS to connect apartments in new residential complexes to the ultra-fast Internet in 2024 if there is an agreement with developers. This was announced on December 15, 2023 by MTS representatives.
XGS-PON is one of the most modern Internet access technologies to optical fiber with transmission rates data up to 10 Gbps for each subscriber, which is 10 times higher than in networks using the current technology - GPON. XGS-PON will allow you to connect modern routers of the 6 (802.11ax) standard to the optical network Wi-Fi with a wireless connection at speeds from 5 to 10 Gbps.
On the XGS-PON network, a file with a film in UHD quality of 8 GB is downloaded in 20-25 seconds, regardless of the number of services and gadgets used in the apartment. This bandwidth is relevant for users whose professions and hobbies are associated with IT and the processing of digital content: video editing and sound engineers, architects and designers, big data analysts, as well as technologists: streamers, gamers or families, where they use a large number of gadgets and smart devices.
To test the XGS-PON technology, MTS installed XGS-PON OLT (Optical Line Terminal) terminals on one of the nodes of the backbone fiber-optic network in Moscow, which made it possible to multiply the throughput of the transport node. On the subscriber side, XGS PON ONT (Optical Network Terminal) terminals were tested. The equipment connected to the transport network demonstrated uninterrupted data transmission at speeds up to 10 Gbps in upstream and downstream flows.
"Every year the flow of information RuNet in increases by an average of 20%. Most of the traffic - 65-70% - comes from video streaming and. computer games According to our forecasts, gigabit home Internet will become the necessary minimum in the next two years, and access speeds up to 10 Gbps using XGS-PON technology will be in demand in the next five years. To meet the growing requests of subscribers, MTS plans to connect residential complexes in Moscow to the XGS-PON line from next year. To commercialize the technology, we are negotiating with developers, "said the technical director. Moscow region MTS Vladislav Medvedev |
"Already next year, XGS-PON technology will allow users in Moscow to simultaneously connect a large number of devices and services that generate a large amount of traffic - for example, video streaming in 8K quality, online games and training with AR and VR, as well as connect gadgets into a single smart network. This is a technological breakthrough that will come to every modern house in a few years, "Medvedev added. |
