2023: Prosthesis Announcement

In June 2023, the E. N. Meshalkin National Medical Research Center (NMIC) in Novosibirsk announced the creation of a hybrid prosthesis with a seamless joint for rapid implantation in thoracic aortic dissection, a disease with high mortality that requires emergency intervention.

The goal of our project was to develop a new hybrid prosthesis, which will standardize the connections between the large branches of the aorta and the aorta itself, allowing to speed up the intervention itself, allow to create a quickly assembled, rapidly implanted hybrid prosthesis, "said Dmitry Sirota, head of the research department of aorta surgery of the coronary and peripheral arteries of the cardiocenter.

When installing other domestic prostheses, the key is to make a seam with very high quality requirements. The new seamless hybrid prosthesis is suitable for faster implantation. This prosthesis does not preclude a conventional surgical suture if necessary. For tests of prosthesis installation, the researchers created a mathematical model of human aortic dissection and a 3D model of pathological aorta. In addition, the authors of the development for the first time introduced antibacterial impregnation of the prosthesis wall to eliminate such a serious complication as its suppuration.

Aortic dissection is an acute condition requiring emergency surgery. Without it, 90% of patients die within 30 days of the onset of symptoms. Such problems are relatively common - in the Novosibirsk region alone, about 280 such patients are registered per year.

In 2024, the Meshalkin Cardiocenter plans to conduct a preclinical assessment of the effectiveness and safety of this device in large laboratory animals. The prosthesis will be implanted in a pig, in six months scientists will assess the structural changes of the transplant.[1]
