For the first time in Russia, a robotic operation was performed to prostrate the abdominal aorta
In Moscow, at the end of June 2024, for the first time in Russia, a robotic operation for prosthetics of the abdominal aorta was successfully carried out. This unique surgical intervention was performed by specialists from the Clinic for Cardiovascular Surgery of the Sechenov University using the da Vinci robotic system.
According to the director of the clinic, Professor Roman Komarov, the patient was a 65-year-old woman diagnosed with Leris syndrome - damage to atherosclerotic plaques of the iliac arteries. Before the operation, the patient experienced severe pain in her legs and could walk no more than 100 meters without stopping.
The use of a robotic system allowed the operation to be carried out through several small punctures instead of the traditional large incision in the abdomen. This significantly reduced the trauma of the intervention and accelerated the patient's rehabilitation process.
Professor Komarov noted that the use of the robot in cardiac surgery significantly expands the capabilities of the surgeon. Unlike laparoscopic instruments that only allow movement in a three-dimensional plane, the robot provides seven or eight directions of motion. This guarantees higher accuracy when performing surgical manipulations.
According to the attending physician, cardiovascular surgeon Kristina Kolosova, the very next day after the operation, the patient was transferred from intensive care to a regular ward. She started walking and stopped experiencing the pains that bothered her before the intervention.
Experts emphasize the importance of timely seeking medical care for such diseases. The lack of surgical treatment can lead to serious complications, such as gangrene of the lower extremities and persistent pain, significantly reducing the quality of life of patients.
Although the da Vinci robotic system has long been used at the Sechenov University Clinical Center for operations in the field of urology, abdominal and thoracic surgery, its use in the field of reconstructive, vascular and cardiac surgery has become a new stage of development.[1]
