A microrobot has been introduced into clinical practice that treats an aneurysm and blocks brain tumors

In late February 2024, a group of Chinese researchers announced the development of a magnetic microfibre robot for medical purposes. It is claimed that the device can reduce the risk of bleeding in a brain aneurysm and help with the therapy of malignant lesions.

Aneurysms and brain tumors are estimated to cause more than 750 thousand deaths annually around the world. One of the main methods of treatment is embolization - the exclusion of pathologically altered vessels from the general circulatory system. This minimally invasive procedure is usually performed by inserting a catheter into the femoral artery and moving it to the target site where embolic materials that overlap the vessel are delivered. However, the method has drawbacks. In particular, difficulties arise in controlling the catheter in complex neurovascular networks. In addition, surgeons are exposed to prolonged exposure to radiation as the procedure is performed under X-ray control. The new development of specialists from the PRC allows you to solve these problems.

A group of Chinese researchers reported on the development of a magnetic microfibre robot to treat aneurysms and brain tumors

The project was attended by scientists from Huazhong University of Science and Technology in Wuhan, the University of Science and Technology of China in Hefei and Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The created micro robot consists of a magnetized fiber coiled in the shape of a spiral. It can adapt to vessels of different sizes and move by rotational movements under the influence of an external magnetic field. The robot can also change shape by lengthening or shrinking.

The researchers proposed using the robot as an adjunct to catheter embolization. Blocking of vessels can be carried out in two ways. In the first case, several microrobots are grouped together and thereby block blood flow: as a result, the brain tumor does not receive nutrition, which prevents its growth. In the second case, special particles are sent to the desired branch of the vessels with the help of a robot to stop blood flow: this also leads to "fasting" of the tumor.[1]
