Surgeons of the National Medical Research Center of Oncology in Rostov began performing robot-assisted operations in patients with malignant neoplasms. The new generation da Vinci Xi system was acquired as part of the Healthcare national project. The press service of the institution announced this at the end of June 2023.
The robot surgeon will help carry out operations in gynecological and urological oncological diseases. It can also be used to remove tumors of the chest and abdominal organs.
The technique allows you to make small cuts in the patient's body and introduce the camera inside. The robotic operation is performed through several small incisions. The endoscope video camera broadcasts a clear 3D image of the organ. The surgeon, using joysticks, transfers hand movements to miniature instruments inside the patient's body, allowing more movement than the human wrist.
The first operation involving the robot was performed on a 73-year-old man. He had the prostate gland affected by the tumour removed. The operation was successful, by the end of June 2023 the patient was on the mend, the National Medical Research Center of Oncology noted.
We prepared in advance for the introduction of robot assisted surgery. The creation of a separate, voluminous operating room for robotic interventions was part of the plan for the reconstruction of the operational block of the Rostov cancer center, - said Oleg Kit, General Director of the National Medical Research Center of Oncology of the Ministry of Health of Russia, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, whose words are quoted by the press service of the National Medical Research Center of Oncology. |
According to him, after reconstruction, the operating room was equipped with a modern robot-assisted surgical system. To perform robotic operations, 4 specialized surgical teams and nursing personnel were trained. The active introduction of this technology into practice brings the level of surgical treatment of cancer to a new level, Kit said.[1]
