China has launched a massive state-run campaign to root out corruption in hospitals. Purchases of medical equipment are decreasing

In mid-September 2023, it became known that a large-scale campaign against corruption in the healthcare sector in China provoked a decrease in purchases of medical equipment. The current macroeconomic situation also has a negative impact on the industry.

The program to eradicate corruption in hospitals is organized by the National Health Commission of the PRC. The initiative covers the entire chain of production, circulation and sales in the pharmaceutical industry. It is assumed that this campaign will not only help in the fight against bribery and speculation, but will also stimulate the consumption of products made by Chinese manufacturers.

Campaign against healthcare corruption triggers decline in medical device purchases

The consequences of the anti-corruption program, according to the MedTech Dive resource, can be felt by a variety of foreign suppliers - from manufacturers of laboratory equipment to developers of imaging systems and surgical robots. On the one hand, market participants say, there is an increase in activity in the Chinese healthcare sector due to unmet demand after three years of quarantine and other strict measures to prevent COVID-19. However, on the other hand, the weakening economy and the state campaign to eradicate bribery can lead to a reduction in orders for medical devices. Goldman Sachs analysts say the health care environment in China remains uncertain.

The American corporation Intuitive Surgical, one of the leaders in the robotic surgery market, said that the anti-corruption initiative in China adds another restriction on the supply of equipment to the country. Siemens Healthineers and Philips, which make imaging systems, and Elekta, which supplies radiotherapy machines, also acknowledged that some short-term orders for the equipment would be delayed.[1]

Chinese authorities launch large-scale campaign to eradicate bribery among doctors

In mid-August 2023, it became known that the National Commission health care China (NHC), along with nine other state departments, organized a large-scale campaign to combat corruption medical in the sector.

According to the Global Times, the initiative is designed for one year and will cover the whole country. In doing so, the focus will be on "several core individuals" and key positions in the pharmaceutical industry. The goal of the program is to ensure a high level of development of medicine and the health sector.

Regulators' attention to certain individuals and positions is explained by the fact that a number of Chinese officials and high-ranking leaders in the medical field have already been convicted of receiving kickbacks, bribery and speculation. This, the NHC says, not only hinders the reform and development of health, insurance and pharmaceutical businesses, but also jeopardizes the interests of the vast majority of people in health care.

The anti-corruption campaign covers the entire chain of production, supply and sales of products in the pharmaceutical industry, as well as administrative departments, industry associations, health care institutions, production and operating enterprises, and health insurance funds.

Chinese media report the suspension and postponement of some scientific conferences in connection with the inspections. The launched anti-corruption program in the health sector is one of the largest in the PRC. It will affect various aspects of medical activities. In particular, the authorities intend to fight the promotion of certain drugs through doctors for money. It is also noted that key persons in medical and health institutions will be checked.[2]
