2019:70 million cases of immune-mediated inflammatory diseases reported worldwide in a year
At the end of 2019, almost 70 million cases of immune-mediated inflammatory diseases (HIA) were registered on a global scale. This is stated in the study of the Collaboration for the Study of the Global Burden of Diseases, the results of which were published on September 8, 2023.
HIA is a heterogeneous group of disorders affecting various organs and tissues, including the skin (psoriasis and atopic dermatitis), joints (rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis), internal organs (inflammatory bowel disease and asthma), and the white and gray matter of the nervous system.
The total number of HIA cases in the world in 2019 was 67,586,168. At the same time, the age-standardized global incidence was recorded at 908.69 per 100,000 population. Rheumatoid arthritis, atopic dermatitis, asthma, multiple sclerosis, psoriasis, inflammatory bowel diseases accounted for 1.59%, 36.17%, 54.71%, 0.09%, 6.84% and 0.6% of the total number of new IHD cases, respectively.
The study, which is funded in part by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, says the pattern of incidence of HLV varies significantly around the world. In particular, the highest rates were recorded in high-income countries. People with HIA often have comorbidities, including cardiovascular and psychiatric ailments, as well as peripheral artery disease.
Multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis do not occur in children under five, the report said, but atopic dermatitis and asthma are not uncommon at this age. At the same time, the largest number of cases of atopic dermatitis was recorded in people under 25 years old. In the age group of 20-59 years, inflammatory bowel diseases are often diagnosed, in the group of 15-54 years - multiple sclerosis, 30-69 years - rheumatoid arthritis.[1]
