Rostelecom in Dagestan has introduced innovative solutions for road safety

2023: Installing 13 smart pedestrian crossings

Rostelecom has installed 13 smart pedestrian crossings on the regional and municipal roads of Dagestan, equipped with automated lamps and photo and video recording complexes. In addition, the company's specialists have equipped five more previously equipped crossings with video surveillance systems. The solution ensures pedestrian safety and compliance with traffic rules. Smart pedestrian crossings appeared in Makhachkala, Buinaksk, Kaspiysk and in 11 more settlements of the district level of the republic. The work was carried out within the framework of the federal project "Safe and High-Quality Roads." Rostelecom announced this on October 12, 2023.

Along with the growth of residents, the concentration of cars on the roads is rapidly increasing. This factor, with insufficient development of road transport infrastructure, increases the number of accidents involving them. The problem is especially acute on high-speed highways passing through settlements, where in conditions of poor visibility, drivers often do not have time to react in time to a pedestrian who suddenly appeared in the headlights. Situations are created that are dangerous for the lives of all participants in the movement. The initiatives of the regional authorities, implemented by Rostelecom specialists to improve the level of safety and comfort of the urban environment, have found an assessment at the highest level, "said Dzhambulat Salavov, Minister of Transport and Roads of the Republic of Dagestan.

Pedestrian crossings with an automatic traffic recognition system are mounted at the intersection of busy transport arteries with a high intensity of pedestrian flow: near schools, social institutions, such as the MPSC, hospitals, shopping centers.

A smart pedestrian crossing system highlights a person who crosses the roadway regardless of their speed. The backlight works even if the pedestrian stops or goes in the opposite direction. This is especially important in relation to children who can suddenly run out onto the road, and then change the trajectory of movement: the system still manages to react and turn on the necessary program. Another advantage of the lighting system is that it does not blind drivers.

"Rostelecom" is systematically introducing a single digital platform into the road transport infrastructure of the republic. Function modules help ensure process transparency and efficient road control. The system performs an important social task: it ensures at pedestrian crossings a decrease in the level of accidents with human casualties, the number of which in the republic remains high. In addition, in general, intelligent transport technologies in settlements make it possible to significantly increase the efficiency of managing urban resources, which has a positive effect on the investment attractiveness of the region, - commented Ruslan Yarakhmedov, director of the Dagestan branch of PJSC Rostelecom.
