2023: Building the System

Russia In created navigation for, drones which, according to the developers, is more accurate. GPS GLONASS We are talking about the technology of St. Petersburg State Electrotechnical University. " The LETI development at the university was told in mid-October 2023.

We have developed an optical navigation system with which a drone can navigate the terrain. To build a map, she needs only objects located on the territory of the drone. The drone can receive additional information by reading special tags on the ground. At the same time, the tags themselves can be different - for example, QR codes or AprilTag tags, - Ruslan Gataullin, an employee of the Mobile Intelligent Systems laboratory at LETI, told TASS.

LETI scientists have created navigation for UAVs

The position of the BVS using the optical navigation system is determined in several stages. First of all, there is the detection and analysis of the surface that the drone "sees" and the comparison of the internal map with reference points, which are determined on the ground, including using tags. After that, using machine vision algorithms, the drone determines its location and conducts an additional assessment of the data received from the inertial navigation system (INS), with which you can obtain information about the position of the drone in space. When creating and testing an optical navigation system, scientists used gyroscopic modules as INS.

According to ON Gataullin, for navigation it drones is developed either in a universal form, or, it is prepared for a specific task and a specific type of BVS. In the first approach, it may take a lot of effort to implement additional functions, and in the second, it eliminates the possibility of using such navigation systems for several types of drones. In their project, LETI specialists tried to find a middle ground, he said.[1]
