2025: Fatal accident in China - an electric car on autopilot was cut into a concrete fence
On March 29, 2025, a Xiaomi SU7 electric car crashed into a concrete fence in Anhui province in eastern China, killing three female students in the cabin. The tragedy occurred against the background of the activated NOA branded autopilot when driving at high speed.
According to CarNewsChina, thanks to the records of the electronic flight log of the burnt electric car, it was possible to restore the sequence of events. About 17 minutes before the collision, the autopilot was activated, the speed of the vehicle at that time was 116 km/h. The system issued warnings several times about the need to hold the steering wheel, and two seconds before the collision, the driver received a notice of the obstacle and a requirement to slow down.
InThe driver tried to adjust the trajectory and brake a second before the impact, but the brake pedal was pressed only by 38%. According to the investigation, the speed of the car at the time of the collision reached 97 km/h. Heavy road fences were installed on the route of the electric car in connection with the repair work.
Onboard electronics SU7 sent a call to the crisis center within two to three seconds after the collision. Eleven seconds later, the fact of the accident was confirmed remotely, after which emergency services were called. We managed to get in touch with the owner of the car after 27 seconds. The owner said that he was fine, but the car was driven by another person, and he himself was far from the scene.
The ambulance crew left less than three minutes after the collision and arrived at the scene twelve minutes later. Unfortunately, it was not possible to save the people in the passenger compartment of the electric car.
During the discussion of the circumstances of the accident, the question arose about the possible blocking of the doors, which could become one of the causes of the death of passengers. Representatives Xiaomi explained that the electric locks might not function after the impact, but each door is equipped with a mechanism for forced mechanical unlocking. Most likely, the doors jammed in the openings due to deformation of the body with a strong impact, and the work of the locks could no longer affect the outcome.[1]
2024: Launch Announcement
On March 12, 2024, Xiaomi announced the start of sales of its first electric car. Its price has not been named. At the same time, earlier Xiaomi director Lei Jun mentioned in various interviews that the car will cost about 500 thousand yuan (approximately $70 thousand).
The car can be ordered from 59 stores in 29 cities across China, the company said.
The BBC notes that the release of the car from Xiaomi could make an adjustment to the "price war" between BYD and Tesla for the Chinese market, the largest electric vehicle market in the world. Over the past year, Tesla has cut prices for its electric vehicles in China by thousands of dollars, and local manufacturers, such as BYD, are responsible for the same.
Lei Jun, director of the company, noted on the Weibo social network that the company hopes that the new Speed Ultra 7 (SU7) will become one of the five most popular electric vehicles in the world. According to the director, the SU7 accelerates faster than Tesla and electric Porshe.
Xiaomi plans to invest $10 billion in its automotive business in the next 10 years.
Among the advantages of SU7, the synchronization of car systems with Xiaomi smartphones stands out thanks to the Xiaomi HyperOS operating system. The car will be produced at the factory of the state-owned manufacturer BAIC Group in Beijing. The production capacity of the plant is 200 thousand cars per year.
Xiaomi shares on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (HKEX) rose 11.34% after the announcement of the electric car[2]
2023: Product Announcement
In November 2023, Xiaomi unveiled its first passenger electric car. It was named SU7.

For the single-wheel drive version, the batteries are supplied by BYD, and for the all-wheel drive version by NMC CATL.
Batteries are also different. With the initial installation, a lithium-iron-phosphate BYD battery is combined, and with a powerful one - lithium-nickel-manganese-cobalt from CATL. The capacity and range are unknown, although earlier insiders talked about a 101-kilowatt traction battery and 800 km on a single charge. Information about the advanced autopilot and multimedia system on the Xiaomi OS was also leaked.
Xiaomi SU7 is 4.9m long, 1.9m wide and 1.4m high, and the axle spacing is 3m. The car is available with 19- or 20-inch wheels and 245/45 R19 or 245/40 R20 tires. The computer vision system is located behind the windshield, and a camera is installed on the side rack. The car also supports facial recognition system unlocking.
Electric motor model - TZ220XS000. It is produced by United Automotive Electronics. The car will also be equipped with the ETC function, a system that allows drivers to automatically pay for travel on toll roads without stopping the car.
Serial production of the SU7 starts in December 2023, deliveries of an electric car are scheduled for February 2024. By mid-November 2023 Beijing , a dozen such test machines were manufactured at the plant. Xiaomi's production partner is the Chinese company Beijing Automotive Industry Holding.[3]
