Bone marrow

2024: The first domestic needle for bone marrow collection was developed and began to be used in Russia

On February 28, 2024, Russian researchers from Samara State Medical University announced the development of a disposable puncture needle to obtain an aspirate, a sample of bone marrow tissue. This is the first product of this type in Russia that can be used to diagnose oncohematological diseases.

The needle received a cut with a changed angle. This makes it possible to increase the area of the hole for collecting bone marrow. Thus, fewer punctures can be performed and the procedure becomes less traumatic. Mass production of new items will be organized on the basis of the Center for Serial Production of SamGMU.

Disposable puncture needle for aspirate developed

It is argued that the needle is superior in efficiency to the products of foreign suppliers who left the Russian market due to the current geopolitical situation. A patent has been obtained for the development. The product is planned to be transferred to leading hematological institutions in Russia.

The developed device will ensure import substitution for this class of medical devices and will contribute to the formation of technological sovereignty, - says Igor Davydkin, Vice-Rector for Scientific Work of SamGMU, chief freelance hematologist of the Samara Region.

Rector of SamGMU, Professor of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Honored Scientist of the Russian Federation Alexander Kolsanov notes that within the framework of the formation of technological sovereignty, it is important to create not only complex high-tech medical products, but also such, at first glance, simple products that are no less important for practical healthcare, for the provision of specialized medical care and diagnostic research. Bone marrow aspiration needles are used in hematology, oncohematology and surgical departments of hospitals.[1]
