2024: Russia launches production of feed protein from gas for feeding animals and fish

A pilot plant for the production of feed protein from natural gas was opened in Kirovo-Chepetsk (Kirov region). The protein production technology was developed by Biopraktika, a Skolkovo resident. This was reported to TAdviser on August 15, 2024 by representatives of Skolkovo.

According to them, this is the first experimental production of microbial feed protein from natural gas in Russia, created using Russian technology. During the pilot production project, innovative solutions were applied that improve the production process and the quality of the final product. Particular emphasis was placed on engineering developments of protein synthesis equipment.

"The technology developed by the'Biopractics' team will enable the production of microbial feed protein from natural gas, providing an alternative to high-quality fish flour and soy for the livestock, poultry and aquaculture industries. This will be an important step in finding answers to the challenges facing the food industry, "said Sergey Portnov, General Director of Biopraktika LLC.

According to representatives of Skolkovo, this technology is important, since it can become one of the components of food security of the Russian Federation. Microbial protein has significant export potential, especially in the Asia-Pacific region, where China is the leader in feed requirements.

"The new technologies developed by Biopraktika allow expanding the technological chains of mining companies on the one hand, and on the other hand, they close critical shortages in feed additives. The opening of a new pilot plant makes it possible to assert that over time this project will grow into large industrial production, "said Sevil Naryshkina, director of the high-performance agro and water industry of the Skolkovo Foundation.

As of August 15, the first contracts have already been signed with Russian and Chinese partners for the supply of experimental batches of protein to future consumers who are ready to conduct protein research in their feed solutions.

According to Dmitry Zaitsev, deputy executive director of the non-state development institute Innopraktika (a member of Biopraktika LLC), the development of the production of feed protein from methane can increase the consumption of natural gas in the domestic market, create an additional way to convert hydrocarbon raw materials into a demanded product with high added value and actually form a new promising gas processing industry in the Russian Federation.
