2024: Orbiting
A Russian Internet of Things satellite was launched into orbit, which was launched on November 5, 2024 from the Vostochny cosmodrome in the Amur Region. The satellite, developed by the St. Petersburg State University of Telecommunications named after Professor M.A. Bonch-Bruevich (SPbGUT), is designed to develop Internet of Things technologies based on the LORA protocol, as well as to conduct observational surveys of the Earth.
According to the press service of the university, the LORA satellite was launched as part of the Space- π mission, in which four small experimental vehicles were launched into orbit. This project is part of a broader program aimed at developing and implementing innovative technologies for scientific and educational purposes. The launch was carried out by the Soyuz-2.1b launch vehicle with the Fregat upper stage, which made it possible to launch spacecraft into the target orbit.
The LORA satellite weighs 3.2 kg and will orbit for about two years. During this period, SPbPUT students will be able to take an active part in controlling the satellite and analyze the data obtained. The main goal of the device is to test the technology of the Internet of things, which will open up new opportunities for various areas, including housing and communal services, transport, agriculture, industry and communications with remote territories. In addition, the satellite will perform the functions of monitoring the flights of unmanned vehicles weighing up to 30 kg and agricultural drones weighing up to 100 kg, which contributes to the expansion of its application value.
Rector of St. Petersburg State University Ruslan Kirichek noted that the launch of the LORA satellite is an important step for the university and the entire scientific environment of Russia. He stressed that the introduction of IoT technology using satellite platforms will significantly increase the level of communication in remote areas and develop the potential of wireless networks. This, in turn, creates the prerequisites for using innovative solutions in a wide range of industries.[1]
