Loss of $900 million due to cyber attack that stopped production
As a result of a massive cyber attack, the British automaker Jaguar Land Rover suffered total losses of about £680 million (about $900). This is stated in the financial report of the company, published on November 14, 2025.
The hacker invasion of the Jaguar Land Rover IT infrastructure became known in early September 2025. The attack proved so devastating that the company had to halt production entirely at all three main sites in Britain. This hit both the automaker itself and component suppliers hard. It was possible to fully normalize the production of cars only by the end of October 2025.
The Jaguar Land Rover financial account says that in the third quarter of 2025 the company lost £485 million (approximately $639 million). This is primarily due to the shutdown of production: in five weeks from the moment of cyber intrusion, not a single car left the production lines of Jaguar Land Rover in Britain.
The direct costs associated with the hacker attack amounted to another £196 million ($258 million). This includes the costs of third-party specialists and consultants, cyber security investigations, and system recovery. Thus, the total losses due to the cyber incident reach $897 million.
According to the Cyber Monitoring Center (CMC), the attack caused damage to the British economy in the amount of £1.9 billion ($2.5 billion), which makes it the most destructive cyber event in the history of the country. To one degree or another, the incident affected the activities of more than 5 thousand companies and organizations. Due to the shutdown of Jaguar Land Rover factories, the volume of car production in Britain in September decreased by 27% - to about 51 thousand cars: this is the lowest figure (for the specified month) since 1952, including the period of the COVID-19 pandemic .[1]
British authorities estimated Jaguar Land Rover losses from cyber attack at $2.5 billion
At the end of August 2025, Jaguar Land Rover faced a major cyber incident. Despite the partial resumption of production, the consequences of the failure remain tangible - from large-scale downtime in factories to disruptions in the dealer network and failures in supply chains. According to the Cyber Monitoring Center, which was released at the end of October 2025, the total damage from a cyber incident could amount to up to £1.9 billion ($2.5 billion), making it potentially the most expensive in British history. More than 5,000 organizations were in the influence zone, and the event itself was classified as systemic, belonging to the third category.
Most of the financial losses are associated with production downtime - only the maintenance of British factories, according to the Cyber Monitoring Center, costs the company about £108 million weekly. The remaining losses were distributed between partners and participants in the supply chain. The loss estimate includes only the UK implications, excluding costs in other regions and possible payments to cyber-smokers - there has been no official confirmation of such claims or transactions.
In September 2025, the UK government provided the company with loan guarantees worth £1.5 billion to maintain liquidity. Although analysts suggest that these funds will not be used, the state support measure itself creates a precedent for future crisis situations.
The full recovery of operating activities is expected no earlier than the beginning of 2026. According to experts, any delays in this process may lead to a further increase in the final losses.
Jaguar Land Rover has refrained from commenting on the damage assessment and recovery forecasts. Cyber Monitoring Center emphasizes that the incident clearly demonstrates the vulnerability of even the largest industrial corporations and the ability of a single failure to launch a chain reaction in related sectors of the economy.[2]
$2 billion state guarantees to save the company
On September 28, 2025, the British government agreed to provide Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) with a government guarantee of £1.5 billion (approximately $2 billion as of this date) so that the company could obtain loans in order to maintain the operation of its complex component supply chain. Financial assistance was needed in connection with a large-scale cyber attack that paralyzed the work of the automaker.
Jaguar Land Rover enterprises in Britain employ about 34 thousand people. In addition, the company manages an extensive supply chain, which employs about 120 thousand more jobs. Moreover, many of them are in small and medium-sized businesses, for which Jaguar Land Rover is the main customer. The shutdown of car production hit such suppliers of components hard, and therefore they need financial support.
This cyber attack was an attack not only on the iconic British brand, but also on our automotive sector, as well as on the men and women whose jobs depend on it. Thanks to our decisive actions, this loan guarantee will help support the supply chain and preserve skilled jobs, "said British Business and Trade Minister Peter Kyle.
A cyber attack on Jaguar Land Rover has caused major disruptions to the company's internal systems and shut down production lines. In addition, there was a leak of information. On September 25, 2025, the automaker announced that it had managed to restore "some of the digital resources," including systems related to billing, parts logistics and sales. And a few days later, the company said it was preparing to resume "some production operations."[3]
2-week downtime due to cyber attack
As of September 17, 2025, employees of Jaguar Land Rover factories have been on unpaid or partially paid leave for more than two weeks. The reason is a massive cyber attack, due to which the automaker was forced to turn off IT systems and stop the production of cars.
Jaguar Land Rover's production facilities include car plants in the British cities of Solihull and Halewood, an engine manufacturing facility in Wolverhampton, and factories in Slovakia, China and India, the Air Force said. Due to a hacker invasion, all production lines were stopped. Many of the company's 33 thousand employees were ordered not to go to work.
Three Jaguar Land Rover plants in Britain typically produce around 1,000 vehicles a day. Downtime, according to estimates, turns into damage of $68.3 million per week. Moreover, the production shutdown has hit car component suppliers hard, for whom Jaguar Land Rover is a key customer. The automaker's complex component procurement chain provides 104,000 jobs. There are concerns that many Jaguar Land Rover suppliers, primarily small and medium-sized enterprises, do not have the resources to cope with the long business interruption and subsequent losses.
This is not just a short-term failure of Jaguar Land Rover - it is a digital siege that caused a shock cyber wave throughout their supply chain, says Liam Byrne, chairman of the House of Commons Business and Trade Committee.
Jaguar Land Rover says production at the plant will not resume until September 24, 2025. However, some sources claim that the interruptions may last until November of this year.[4]
Production shutdown due to cyber attack
In early September 2025, British automaker Jaguar Land Rover reported a massive cyber attack on its IT infrastructure. As a result of the hacker invasion, the company was forced to turn off computer systems and stop the production of cars.
In connection with the incident, Jaguar Land Rover management sent an email to staff at the Halewood plant, near Liverpool, telling them not to go to work, according to the Liverpool Echo. The attack affected IT systems serving both the company's production facilities and sales salons.
Jaguar Land Rover has been hit by a cyber incident. We immediately took steps to mitigate its effects by shutting down our information systems in advance. We are now working on a controlled restart of our global applications. At the moment, there is no evidence of theft of customer data, but our retail and production activities are seriously disrupted, the automotive company said in an official statement.
Any additional details about the attack were not disclosed. According to the Air Force, a group of young English-speaking hackers, which is associated with a cyber attack on the British retail company Marks & Spencer, claimed responsibility for the invasion. As evidence of the hacking of Jaguar Land Rover's IT infrastructure, the attackers posted a number of screenshots taken from the automaker's internal networks. It is known that the hacker group includes members of such cyberbands as Shiny Hunters, Lapsus $ and Scattered Spider. According to the Air Force, cybercriminals are demanding a ransom from Jaguar Land Rover, although the company itself does not comment on this issue[5]

Hundreds of gigabytes of customer and employee data leaked
In mid-March 2025, it became known that the information infrastructure of the automaker Jaguar Land Rover was subjected to a hacker attack. The attackers managed to steal hundreds of gigabytes of confidential information, including internal company documents, software source codes, as well as personal data of employees and partners.
The Hellcat ransomware group claimed responsibility for the invasion. During the hack, the attackers used the credentials of one of the LG Electronics employees who had access to Jaguar Land Rover's Jira server. The Jira platform is a workflow management tool for software development teams: the system is necessary for efficient planning, process optimization, progress tracking, coherent work and analytics. In total, cybercriminals stole 350GB of Jaguar Land Rover information from servers.
Hackers used LG Electronics to steal credentials. malware Members of the Hellcat group use various tools. This is, in particular, the malware Lumma, which imperceptibly infects victims' devices - often through phishing emails, downloads of any files or hacked websites. Once injected, the malware ON retrieves sensitive data, including login credentials for enterprise systems. This information can then be used to organize more complex attacks, including for the purpose of extortion.
The investigation showed that in the course of the Jaguar Land Rover hack, cybercriminals used the old but still valid credentials of an LG Electronics employee who had access to the automaker's Jira server. As of mid-March 2025, Jaguar Land Rover assesses damage from intrusion.[6]
