Biography
Salva Kiir was born on September 13, 1951 in the village of Akon, Bahr el Ghazal region, into a family of ethnic Dinka.
In the 1960s, he joined an insurgency fighting against Sudan's northern government.
When the second civil war broke out in 1983, Kiir became one of the founders of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement and the Sudan People's Liberation Army.
In 2011, after the referendum, South Sudan became an independent state, and Kiir was elected its first president.
In 2013, Salva Kiir accused Vice President Riek Machar of attempting a coup. This accusation led to armed clashes between forces loyal to Kiir and supporters of Machar, mainly from the Nuer people.
The war continued until 2018, when a peace agreement was signed providing for the creation of a government of national unity. However, implementation of the agreement has been hampered by political divisions, mistrust and ongoing violence.
