2025: Move to MWS Cloud Platform Video Platform

KION Online Cinema switched to a video platform of its own design. This was MTS announced on November 12, 2025.

More than 50 new microservices were created, and the platform for November 2025 processes over 80,000 requests per second.

The key task was a seamless transition without stopping the service. To implement the project, a complete data model was described and all dependencies of the functionality provided by the external platform were identified. Since it was impossible to switch all users at the same time, the KION command implemented two-way data synchronization between the external vendor platform and its own video platform. In solving the problem with a fleet of legacy devices, a component was developed that fully repeats the API of an external platform, but uses its own service as a backend.

To implement a seamless transition for all users, a private installation was built using the MWS command, which withstood double load from clients and data synchronization, and also implemented GEO redundancy (active-active). After raising the platform on the new resource, the migration process began.

To create a storage server and distribute content, a solution from MWS Cloud Platform - Object Storage was tested, where the entire KION library was later transferred.

To minimize risks, an internal architecture of the facade of an external vendor was investigated, which has several GEO-exits. Specialists, making changes to the configuration of the external platform, servially sent requests from users from selected regions, smoothly increasing the load on their own video platform.

In parallel, an update started on user devices to switch to the KION video platform. This process was controlled through A/B experiments. After all user requests were transferred to their own solution, bypassing the platform of the external vendor, data synchronization was disabled.

The platform provides improved service support and stability, and allows the team to quickly implement updates and new features. Now KION fully controls the technological basis of the product: from the introduction of personalized solutions to scaling under growing loads. It is also important to note that during the project, a unique team of specialists with competencies was formed within the company, which were previously presented on the Russian market in a limited volume. This strengthened the internal expertise of KION in technical aspects, - said Alexey Arefiev, director of digital development at KION.

The transition to its own platform allowed KION to strengthen key technological competencies and confirmed the possibility of developing high-load video platforms in the domestic market. This platform provides additional capabilities to scale and accelerate development while maintaining stability under increasing loads.
