2021: Construction of a new aircraft carrier for 500 billion rubles

On May 18, 2021, it became known about Russia's planned expenses for the construction of a new aircraft carrier - about 500 billion rubles. Such a figure "RIA Novosti" was named by a member of the board of the Military Industrial Commission (MIC) of Russia, a member of the Maritime College under the government, Vladimir Pospelov.

According to him, the displacement of this aircraft carrier should be at least 70-80 thousand tons, and when creating such large-scale ships, there is a risk of higher costs as construction proceeds.

We can make a mistake by 10-20%, but not at times. Otherwise, we will go into long-term construction for many years, "Pospelov said.

He added that the Russian aircraft carrier should be cheaper and be slightly smaller than the American ones, which have 110 thousand tons of displacement and accept more than 100 aircraft, including drones.

According to the expert, a junior researcher at IMEMO RAS Ilya Kramnik, before investing 500 billion rubles. in the construction of an aircraft carrier for the Russian fleet, it is necessary to fulfill many preconditions for its maintenance, otherwise the ship may not achieve normal combat effectiveness.

In principle, half a trillion for the construction of such a ship is an amount that can correspond to reality, it is cheaper than American aircraft carriers. The cost of modern aircraft carriers in some cases exceeds $10 billion... But you can't measure the cost of building an aircraft carrier only by the cost of the ship itself, "he said in a conversation with RBC.

By May 2021, the Navy has only one ship capable of launching and receiving fighters - the heavy aircraft-carrying cruiser Admiral Kuznetsov. It was launched in 1987 and is part of the Northern Fleet. The cruiser can base 28 aircraft and 24 helicopters. The ship is under planned modernization in Murmansk.^[1]
