Creation of the third largest cryptocurrency reserve in the world thanks to hydroelectric power plants
The Kingdom of Bhutan has formed the third largest state reserve of Bitcoin in the world using mining at hydroelectric power plants. This was announced by representatives of the sovereign fund of Bhutan on June 27, 2025.
According to The Wall Street Journal, the Himalayan state with a population of less than 800 thousand people has accumulated cryptocurrency assets worth $1.3 billion, which is 40% of the country's gross domestic product. The kingdom has mined more than 12.06 thousand bitcoins through mining running on renewable hydropower. The CEO of the sovereign wealth fund of Bhutan Druk Holding and Investments, Ujwal Deep Dahal, noted that the country considers bitcoin as a means of saving, similar to gold.
The cryptocurrency mining project was launched in 2019 as part of the research unit of the national fund. Dahal said that the work began with studying materials on the Internet and watching educational videos on YouTube about bitcoin mining technologies. This allowed the team to master the basic principles of digital asset extraction.
In 2020, Bhutan began construction of the first state mining platform. By 2022, four specialized platforms for mining cryptocurrencies were already operating in the country. At the moment, the kingdom operates six mining facilities controlled by the state-owned company Green Digital.
Cryptocurrency activity has become an important source of revenue for Bhutan's economy. In 2023, the government sold bitcoins worth $100 million, directing the funds received to double the wages of government employees. This measure was intended to reduce the outflow of young specialists from the country.
Bitcoin mining allows Bhutan to develop the economy while maintaining national environmental values. The kingdom strictly controls industrial activity, banning industries capable of damaging the environment. The use of hydroelectric power for mining complies with environmental policy. states[1]
