The Himalayan kingdom Butane has completed the integration of the National Digital Identification platform with. The blockchain Ethereum country is the first in the world to enshrine a sovereign digital identification system on the public Ethereum blockchain. This is reported by CryptoDNES in mid-October 2025.
The announcement of the transfer of the system was made at an official event. The ceremony was attended by HRH Gyalsay Jigme Namgyal Wangchuk. He became Bhutan's first digital citizen in 2023. The transition highlights the country's commitment to creating a secure and future-ready digital ecosystem based on blockchain technology.
The digital identification project was implemented as part of the activities of the GovTech Agency and Druk Holding and Investments. The system is designed to provide citizens with complete control over personal data. The NDI platform uses the principles of self-sovereign identification. Citizens can safely store, transfer and verify credentials without the mediation of third parties.
GovTech Secretary Jigme Tenzing described the move to Ethereum as a milestone in strengthening Bhutan's digital base. According to him, the blockchain provided by the Polygon platform was previously used. The transition to Ethereum further strengthens the security of the national digital identification system. The global decentralization of Ethereum makes the system almost immune to failures, ensuring security and stability.
This is not just a technical update, but a strategic step towards digital sovereignty. By placing the identity infrastructure on Ethereum, Bhutan ensures the transparency and immutability of data on one of the most proven public blockchains in the world.
In 2024, Bhutan became the first country to roll out the NDI platform on the Polygon blockchain as a pilot project. Integration with Ethereum involves a complete transition to the main network of the first level. The transition is expected to be completed by early 2026, according to projections by public broadcaster Bhutan.[1]
