2019: Arrest of Russian sailors with record cocaine shipment
The ESER ship with a cargo of cocaine entered Cape Verde unplanned on January 30, 2019, due to the death of one of the crew members. Local security forces searched the ship on a tip and found 9 tons of cocaine. The seized consignment of drugs became the largest in the history of Cape Verde.
The ship's crew has been in custody ever since. The beginning of their trial has been postponed more than once. The sailors themselves declared innocence.
In January 2020, in Cape Verde, in a hospital in the city of Praia, one of the Russian sailors died of a long illness.
Sergei Zhivotov has been feeling bad for the past few months. His lawyer, with the help of Russian diplomats, managed to get him temporarily transferred from prison to the city hospital. He became better through treatment and an individual diet. A few days ago, his condition deteriorated sharply, the transfer back to the hospital did not help and he died.
