2022: In the EU, Cyprus was the first country with full 5G coverage
On May 2, 2022, Cyprus became the first member state of the European Union (EU) to achieve 100% coverage of the 5G network, even in the most remote areas, Cyta announced. The notification was made after the network reached the village of Sikopetra in Pitsilia, which was the last stop on the way to achieving the goal.
On November 5, 2020, the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Anastasiadis, demanded that the Government providers and the Government launch a campaign to combat unfounded rumors regarding the involvement of fifth-generation mobile communications in distribution coronavirus and to convey to the public information the benefits that this connection provides. Protests against the creation of 5G networks in Cyprus led to the fact that on the island there were repeated cases of arson of antennas and telephone masts that spread the communication signal.
The first communication network in this standard - Cytamobile-Vodafone 5G, which allowed to provide a traffic speed of 1 gigabit per second with the ability to simultaneously connect to thousands of devices, began to spread in Cyprus from February 1, 2021.
{{quote 'Cyta is one of the key pillars in the effort to create a basic mountain development policy that addresses the promotion of digital transition, efficient infrastructure and service development, with the goal of modernizing mountain areas and improving technological accessibility for both residents and businesses. This is an achievement that no country has achieved so far. It is important for us at Cyta that all Cypriots participate in the digital transition. Because we are one country, at the same speed, equal in the world of communications, "said the Commissioner for Mountain Affairs Kostas Hambiaouris. }} The Sikopetra community organized a small ceremony in honor of the installation of the last 5G antenna on the network in the presence of Deputy Minister for Research, Innovation and Digital Policy Kyriakos Kokkinos and other officials. Recognizing Cyta's key role in the country's digital transition, Kokkinos said that the immediate availability of networks and services in every corner of Cyprus contributes to increasing the digital maturity of the country and its people, and, as a result, strengthening the sustainability of its economy.[1]
