The number of Russians living in Cyprus since 2022 has decreased from 120 thousand to 50 thousand people

The number of Russians living in Cyprus from 2022 by the middle of 2024 decreased by almost 60% - from 120 thousand to 50 thousand people. This is due to European sanctions against Russia, which provoked the massive closure of bank accounts and tightening of financial control. This is stated in the materials of The New European, published on September 25, 2024.

Russian businessmen, as noted, began to actively create companies in Cyprus in 2000, when the two countries agreed on a "tax agreement on income and capital," which provided Russians with favorable tax conditions when opening a business on the island. This attracted hundreds of thousands of Russian companies and their owners. However, the situation has changed dramatically against the backdrop of a deteriorating geopolitical situation.

According to data obtained by the Associated Press, from 2014 to 2024, the number of Russian customers in Cyprus banks decreased by 82%. At the same time, the volume of Russian deposits decreased by 76%. Cyprus has been known for years as a jurisdiction where "few questions are asked" and whose banks have welcomed money from wealthy savers "despite their shadow connections," it says. But that began to change after the 2013 financial crisis, which pushed the country to the brink of bankruptcy. In the period since 2014, Cypriot banks severed business ties with almost 60 thousand customers, mainly citizens of Russia and Ukraine, and also froze about 126 thousand accounts for a total of about €40 billion. At the end of 2023, information appeared that Cyprus banks, as part of "preventive measures," were instructed to stop all operations in rubles.[1]

The number of Ukrainian refugees is less than 50 thousand.
