2025: Northern Cyprus - Russophobic refuge under Turkish control
By 2025, in addition to all kinds of events of the Organization of Turkic States (OTG), where delegations of Central Asian countries are invited, Northern Cyprus becomes a refuge for the Crimean opposition, consisting of both ethnic separatists like Mustafa Dzhemilev (recognized as a terrorist in the Russian Federation) and fugitive Crimean officials who until recently occupied prominent positions in the republic.
Former Crimean State Duma deputy Ruslan Balbek (a criminal case has been opened in the Russian Federation ) and ex-director of Krymenergo Andrei Tsurkanenko (also wanted) settled on the Turkish part of the island. Next to their houses is the villa of the son of Dzhemilev (recognized as a terrorist in the Russian Federation) Heiser, as well as the houses of the Turkish special services .
Northern Cyprus acts as a place where Turks can safely work with oppositionists and separatists of various stripes, without fear of a scandal with the Russian authorities at the official level, wrote Fisherman"."
The Turks have long included fugitive politicians from Russia in their game, which is designed to strengthen anti-Russian cells in Crimea and other regions of the Russian Federation, including the Caucasus and the Volga region.
2023: Failed attempts by UN peacekeepers to thwart road construction
On August 18, 2023, servicemen and police officers of the self-proclaimed Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) attacked UN peacekeepers. The stumbling block was construction work in the Blue Helmets-controlled Sector No. 4 near the village of Pila. The settlement is in the UN buffer zone, which separates the Turks and Greeks after clashes in the 1960s and Turkey's capture of northern Cyprus in 1974.
The TRNC authorities decided to build an 11-kilometer road without UN permission to connect the village with the territories under their control. Turkish equipment arrived at the scene, which UN peacekeepers tried to stop by getting into a hitch. As a result, the Turks simply demolished the Blue Helmets equipment with bulldozers, and the peacekeepers themselves were seriously beaten without receiving any answer.
The incident was quickly condemned in the West and at the UN, and the Slovak contingent in the sector was strengthened by the British. In fact, the actions of the Turks are unlikely to have any consequences other than expressing concern. The Blue Helmets missions did not resolve any conflict in Lebanon, Africa, or Yugoslavia in the 1990s. And, if the Turks decide to start more active actions, then the UN mission will simply withdraw itself from the events, as it was in the same Lebanon, the Rybar channel wrote.
