2020: Russia won the international competitions in ethic hacking of CTFZone 2020

The Russian team won the final of the international competitions in the ethic hacking of CTFZone 2020 which took place on April 25-26, 2020. The organizer of a competition - BI.Zone company reported about it.

CTF (Capture The Flag) is a tournament where commands solve practical problems in the field of cyber security to receive a character sequence — "flag". CTFZone is a qualification stage of the large international DEF CON CTF CTF tournament which passes 30 years in Las Vegas. It means that the command which wins CTFZone final automatically receives the place in the final of DEF CON CTF. For April, 2020 in the world only six tournaments on cyber security through which it is possible to reach the final of DEF CON, and CTFZone - one of them.

As a result of 24-hour fight prize fund in $18,000 was separated by commands from Russia and China which took the first three places. The Russian team of More Smoked Leet Chicken (MSLC) got the first place, and together with it — the right to participate in the final of DEF CON CTF.

Organizers told TAdviser that in a tournament for MSLC played 20 people: a half of normal team's line-up, other half — the invited students from universities of St. Petersburg who participate in SPbCTF. All participants are integrated by interest in the sphere of cyber security, study and they work in the different companies and universities across all Russia, explain in BI.Zone.

The final passed online in the Attack/Defense format: each command received a dedicated server or small network for maintenance of its functioning and protection. During play of the team scored points for correct work of services of the server and for the stolen flags from servers of rivals. Quicker to detect as much as possible vulnerabilities in services of opponents and at the same time to reflect attacks on own IT infrastructure, participants needed to have knowledge in many areas: from security of web applications to applied cryptography and the return development.

According to the results of the selection CTFZone tour in November, 2019 in which more than 1000 commands from 84 countries took part the final was reached by 10 strongest: from Russia, China, Italy, the USA, Poland and Japan. At the same time 6 of them are included in the top ten commands of the world, according to the international rating of participants of CTF of the competition CTFtime.

For us CTFZone is always a call. We try to approach very responsibly the organization of competitions, to ensure smooth operation of our infrastructure. In 2020 in addition to classical services, we thought up a task for security of mobile platforms and also service with visualization. Commands in real time could see how the algorithms written by them attack each other and what of them is more effective. Similar services - special for a classical CTF competition, and many participants noted that it made a competition especially interesting, noted Evgeny Voloshin, the director of the block of expert services BI.Zone.
