Creation of private clouds (Russian market)

The cost of creating private clouds is up to 70% of the cloud computing market in Russia: unlike the Western IT market, public cloud services have not yet become so widespread on the domestic one, primarily due to security reasons. A compromise between service providers and enterprises will be the development of hybrid clouds, where the requirements for protecting the information of a particular organization, as well as other parameters, can be combined as flexibly as possible.

Market Volume and Dynamics

The Russian cloud computing market in 2013, according to Tadviser, grew by 50% and amounted to 10.97 billion rubles. Of these, up to 70% were private cloud projects and related project activities. Thus, the volume of the private cloud market in Russia at the end of 2013 amounted to more than 7 billion rubles.

The difference between the Russian cloud market and the global one is that our private cloud model still prevails over the public cloud, while in developed IT markets the situation is just the opposite. According to Gartner, the global public cloud market for 2013 reached $131 billion: this is an established and highly competitive business sector. Softline cites estimates that the private cloud segment in Russia is growing by 70-80%, exceeding twice the global growth rate in revenue in this segment (about 20-30%).

In Russia, the development of the public cloud segment is restrained, firstly, and mainly, by the lack of powerful service providers that can guarantee the proper level of security and service to a wide range of business customers. In addition, the mentality of Russian enterprises and the historical features of the enterprise automation market affect: here the front line, including the mastery of the topic cloud, telecom and banks, for which the private cloud model is the most suitable. The top three customers in the private cloud market also include retail, primarily, of course, retail companies.

In 2013, TAdviser estimated that operating services in private clouds showed a slightly lower growth rate than in public ones. This is due to the fact that Russian customers prefer to resort to the services of IT companies at the project stage, namely, they implement private cloud service on their own. However, the number of projects where private cloud services will be provided from the provider's data center will grow. Especially by moving the hybrid cloud model "into the masses" when public and private sector resources are used in a bundle.

Major players

The largest players in the private cloud market in Russia are system integrators with strong project teams with competencies for the implementation of such projects, as well as, for the most part, their own data centers for the provision of services according to the IaaS model. These are, in particular, Softline, Asteros, Ai-Teko, CRIC, IBS and others.

From private cloud projects, experts suggest "ideally" disassociating enterprise infrastructure virtualization projects when a cloud cluster is created from several server nodes with a virtual environment. A full-fledged "private" cloud refers to an automated hardware and software environment with a certain list of cloud services provided on its basis and existing rules for their use, as well as management and control tools.

"In reality, there are few examples of the implementation of such a scenario in the Russian market. These are literally several enterprise-level companies that use a private "cloud," primarily for testing new developments and for some system-wide, infrastructure tasks, "experts say CROC."

Small virtualization projects thus continue to play a significant role in the private cloud market.

Influencers

As a deterrent to the development of private clouds in Russia, IT experts cite the immaturity of IT services and their inability to build modern relations with internal customers, stringent information security requirements in many enterprises that hinder the transition to the cloud, as well as difficulties in reorganizing business processes and transferring organizations to more flexible interaction schemes of key employees and services.

As for the driver of the development of the private cloud market, the state can serve them. In particular, at the level of sectoral ministries and interaction between state authorities over the past few years, a dialogue has been conducted on a service approach to providing public services to the population, which can be provided at the IT infrastructure level, including through the use of a "cloud" resource allocation model.

Ai-Teko believes that companies that had not previously planned this will now look at cloud services. And for those who have already considered such an opportunity, it may be easier to make a final decision. This is because for many companies today the task of modernizing the server fleet is relevant, and the ability to replace "iron" with new is objectively less for most than before, including for financial reasons. Thirdly, professional cloud service providers have appeared on the market, industry standards are being formed, and project experience is being systematized.

Customers place very strict and detailed requirements on private clouds in terms of safety, reliability, service stability, and quality of support. Only large providers with sufficient resources, a high level of competence and a willingness to guarantee quality can fulfill such requirements. Therefore, in the near future the market will go into the stage of consolidation - its first signs were noted already in 2013.

Tightening legislative requirements for the processing of personal data can also become one of the drivers of market growth.
"Choosing between placing data in a public or private cloud, customers will be even more demanding on the provider's resources: the location of data centers, the availability of necessary certificates and licenses," say Ai-Teko.
