Digital Substation Cyber Polygon (DIN)

On October 12, 2022, MPEI, together with InfoTeCS Group of Companies, presented a project aimed at ensuring the protection of critical information infrastructure in the electric power industry.

A Cyber ​ ​ polygon of digital substations (DIN) has appeared in Russia, allowing you to simulate and test various scenarios for the operation of physical and information processes in large power systems and in distribution electrical networks. One of the areas of use of the Cyber ​ ​ Police of the DIN was testing scenarios for the operation of information protection tools and assessing their impact on the performance of the basic functionality of the DIN.

The DIN cyber police is designed to demonstrate and test digital relay protection and automation systems (RPA), modeling the Ecosystem of Digital Services, as well as scenarios for ensuring their safe operation. It is a cyberphysical model. Implementation of information security scenarios allows testing the impact of protection systems on technological processes and simplifying the work of personnel in the design, adjustment and operation of power facilities.

Our Cyber ​ ​ polygon allows you to simulate the behavior of power systems in various operating modes, as well as simulate the consequences of computer incidents on the operation of power systems. This helps to gain practical skills in setting up built-in and superimposed information protection tools, to improve qualifications in the field of designing information security systems for electric power facilities. In addition, the creation of the Cyber ​ ​ Polygon allows you to model the main technical solutions for creating an entire Ecosystem of Digital Services for the electric power industry. The development of such ecosystems will automate decision-making processes in the design, adjustment and operation of energy facilities through the use of AI methods, "said Alexander Voloshin, director of the NTI Center at MPEI.

The template was created jointly with the MPEI NTI Center on the basis of the RPA virtual terminal and a lightweight mode modeling system. The Ampire platform with a set of such templates will be able to provide training of information security specialists for the electric power industry at a qualitatively different level. Enriching the Ampire cyber polygone allows you to optimize its work for the requirements of the electric power industry, and for the Cyber ​ ​ polygone DIN simplify the demonstration of virtual scenarios and ensure a qualitatively different level of its work, the parties noted.

Cybersecurity of electric power facilities equipped with digital monitoring systems, RPA and emergency automation is a relatively young topic. There are very few such projects, while cybersecurity issues at electric power facilities are becoming more and more relevant. We actively work with this industry, actively interact with industry partners who understand its specifics. ViPNet products have great potential for implementation across different types of customer infrastructure. Tests at the Cyber ​ ​ Poligon DIN Center NTI NIU MPEI - another successfully implemented project for the development of the industrial line InfoTeCS, - said Dmitry Gusev, Deputy General Director of InfoTeCS.
