2024: Digital marking of cables and wires is launched in Russia

In early May 2024, the Ministry of Industry and Trade issued a decree on conducting an experiment in labeling in Russia by identifying certain types of cable and conductor products. The corresponding document is published on the official Internet portal of legal information.

It follows from it that the experiment on digital labeling of cables and wires will be held from March 20, 2024 to February 28, 2025. The pilot project will cover cables and wires for a voltage of 1000 V. Participation in it is voluntary, and manufacturers will receive marking codes free of charge.

Manufacturers, importers and sellers of these products participate in the labeling experiment on a voluntary basis. Based on the results of the experiment, a decision will be made on the feasibility of introducing mandatory labeling of certain types of cable and conductor products. The operator of the information system used for the purpose of the experiment will be the Center for the Development of Advanced Technologies (Operator-CRPT LLC).

According to Dmitry Gorelik, director of industrial labeling at the CRPT, citing data from the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation and the National Association of Manufacturers of Building Materials and the Construction Industry (NOPSM Association), by May 2024 the share of falsification of cables in Russia exceeds 40%. It is reported that 7 out of 16 samples of cables and wires do not meet the GOST requirements for quality and safety, and also pose a fire hazard during operation, Gorelik explained.

According to the representative of the CRPT, participation in the experiment will test the technologies for applying marking to different types of cable packaging and exclude the possibility of distributing and using counterfeit goods.
