Earthquakes

Main article: Earth (planet)

An earthquake can occur due to many factors, among them: plate tectonics, magma movement in volcanoes, changes in water temperature or pressure, and strong winds.

Three major earthquake zones on the planet

No corner of the planet is immune to an earthquake, but most often they occur in these three zones of the earth:

  • The Pacific seismic belt, it is also called the "Ring of Fire." It lies along the edge of the Pacific Ocean, where about 81% of the world's largest earthquakes occur. Earthquakes in these places are caused by sliding between tectonic plates and breaks within them.

  • Alpine seismicity belt. Stretching from Java to Sumatra, it goes on to pass through the Himalayas, Mediterranean and Atlantic.

  • Mid-Atlantic Range. The ridge marks where the two tectonic plates diverge. Much of the Mid-Atlantic Range is deep underwater. However, there is, for example, Iceland, which is located right above the Mid-Atlantic Range, and there earthquakes are not uncommon.

The publication notes that the seismic hazard rating is headed by two Asian countries - China and Indonesia, in each of which more than one and a half hundred earthquakes have occurred since 1990. For comparison, in Italy, which is considered the most dangerous region of Europe, 23 were registered during the same period. In Russia - 34, most of them in Kamchatka, Kuril Islands and Sakhalin.[1]
