2023: Demolition of the city after the earthquake

In mid-February 2023, the government Turkey decided to demolish the city of Nurdagi, which became one of the foci. A killing earthquakes new settlement will be built in its place. According to Turkish data MEDIA, , the population of the city was at least 40 thousand people.

Turkey suffered one of the most devastating earthquakes in recent history on February 6, 2023. According to the Turkish Disaster Management Authority as of February 14, 2023, 31,643 people died in the country, while in northwestern Syria, according to the UN, the death toll reached 5,714. The UN says that more than 800 thousand people are deprived of full nutrition, and its local aid agency warns that the final death toll from the earthquake is likely to double.

Nurdagi after earthquake

The earthquake-hit town of Nurdagy in Turkey's Gaziantep province will be completely demolished. This was announced by Acting Governor Osman Bilgin. He reported that no efforts will be made to restore the city, which was once home to thousands of people. According to Bilgin, as of February 14, 2023, search and rescue operations are underway in the last eight houses, where people may be under the rubble.

The main region affected by the earthquake was Southeast Anatolia. The destruction affected at least 11 of the 81 Turkish provinces: in addition to Gaziantep and Kahramanmaras, these are Hatay, Adyaman, Diyarbakyr, Malatya, Osmania, Elazig, Kilis, Sanliurfa and Adana. On February 7, 2023, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan introduced an emergency regime in ten of them until May 2023. According to him, the disaster affected 13 million people.^[1]
