2022

Trade deficit with China

For the first time in history, Spain imports more from China than from EU countries

In 2022, China bought only 2% of Spain's exports, and Spain's trade deficit with the Asian country is 26.97 billion euros by the end of August, up 12 billion from the same time last year.

The COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic and the conflict in Ukraine have changed global trade, and now Spain is importing more goods and services from China than from the European Union for the first time.

The latest figures from the country's Ministry of Industry and Trade for August show that 13.2% of imports are from China, with volume up 62% from a year ago.

Most imports from China are technology products, and they have increased by 50% compared to last year. This was not because Spain needs so much, but because of fears of supply chain disruptions due to the Chinese government's zero Covid policy.

2013: Country record: €234.24 billion (+ 5.2 %)

Spanish exports in 2013 grew by 5.2% and reached in monetary terms the amount of 234.24 billion euros, which is the highest result in the history of the country.

As Secretary of State for Trade Jaime Garcia-Legas explained at a press conference, "if we count in the prices of the previous year, the growth was 5.4%, but due to a slight decrease in the value of certain goods, we have 5.2%."

The volume of imports, on the contrary, decreased by 1.2% and amounted to 250.192 billion euros in monetary terms.

The commercial deficit (the difference between exports and imports) decreased in 2013 by 48.1% and amounted to €15.955 billion.

"A significant share of Spanish imports are energy and energy itself," Garcia-Legas said. "Minus this sector, Spain would have a surplus in the export-import sphere of €25.042 billion."

Spain owes a noticeable increase in the supply of goods abroad primarily to the development of new markets - Asia (an increase in supplies by 10.3%) and Africa (8.4%). Experts also note changes in the picture in relations Spain with states: in European Union 2012, a decline of 1.3% was recorded in this area, in 2013 - a rise of 4.7%.

Furniture exports - 1.6 billion euros (+ 15 %)

Sales of Spanish furniture abroad in 2013 increased by 15.4% and amounted to 1.603 billion euros. The relevant statistics were obtained by the National Association of Furniture Manufacturers and Exporters of Spain (ANIEME). According to its chairman, Juan Carlos Muñoz, the increase in exports is a result of "serious efforts by Spanish furniture manufacturers to combat weakening domestic demand."[2] grew[2]

The report also said furniture imports totalled €1.955 billion in 2013, up 0.2% from a year earlier. The main importer turned out to be, China which accounted for 21% of the furniture imported into the country. However, compared to 2012, its results were 9.3% lower. The list of major suppliers also included Portugal,, Germany Italy, France and Poland.

The main buyers of Spanish furniture were France, Portugal, Germany and the United Kingdom, which accounted for 49.9% of total foreign sales. In Italy, in turn, their level decreased by 17%. The Netherlands, by contrast, bought 103.6% more Spanish furniture compared to 2012.

The export of Spanish furniture to Russia showed a significant increase - by 37.6%. At the same time, supplies of both home furniture and equipment for commercial enterprises and catering establishments increased. Today, restaurateurs are increasingly choosing practical durable designs. For example, preference is given to the metal sub-layers of production of proven companies. According to the same principle, furniture for a food court, bar counters, summer furniture, etc. are selected.

ANIEME also notes strong sales growth USA in (30%) and Saudi Arabia (22.1%), as well as Turkey in (69.8%), Qatar (69%), (Brazil 50%) and Mexico (14%).

Among the autonomous communities, the leader in exports was Catalonia, which took first place with an indicator of 399m euros, or 24.9% of the national amount. However, compared to 2012, the volume of exports in the region decreased by 3.6%. The second place with an indicator of 384 million (24%) is occupied by Valencia, which in 2013 significantly improved sales indicators - by 24.5%. In addition, a noticeable increase in this indicator - by 36% - occurred in Galicia, which took third place. Andalusia improved 64.5%, Madrid 38.5%, Aragon 43.1% and Murcia 14.1%.

Muñoz assured that in such a difficult economic situation, exports are for Spanish companies "the need and only opportunity to get out of the crisis, which significantly affects improvements in the country's economy."
