Arms exports for the year collapsed 3.5 times to 8.2 billion euros
In 2023, the volume of French arms exports amounted to about €8.2 billion. For comparison, a year earlier, the figure was estimated at €27 billion. Thus, exports collapsed by almost 3.5 times, or 70%. This is stated in the parliamentary report prepared by the Ministry of Armed Forces of France in early September 2024.
It is noted that the large volume of arms exports in 2022 is primarily due to the fact that the French aerospace company Dassault Aviation received an unprecedented order from the UAE for 80 Rafale fighters worth more than €16 billion. At the same time, in 2023, French defense companies were able to conclude an agreement worth €2.6 billion for the shipment of 18 Rafale fighters to Indonesia, as well as several smaller contracts (worth more than €200 million) for self-propelled howitzers, unmanned aerial vehicles and corvettes for Angola, Greece and Lithuania.
According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), arms exports from France increased by 47% between 2019 and 2023 compared to 2014-2018. The largest share of arms exports from France (about 42%) fell on states Asia Oceania, another 34% - on the countries of the Middle East. The largest recipient of French arms exports was India with an indicator of almost 30%. The growth in French arms exports is largely due to the supply of combat aircraft to India, and. Qatar Egypt
France uses high global demand to stimulate its military industry through exports, says SIPRI researcher Katarina Djokic. |
In 2024, the volume of orders for French weapons is expected to be much more significant compared to 2023 - in particular, thanks to a contract for four submarines between Naval Group and the Netherlands, as well as a bid for 12 Rafale fighters from Serbia.[1]
Deficit in trade with Algeria 2.1 billion euros with its growth to 11.8 billion euros
The trade turnover of the two countries in 2023 reached 11.8 billion euros, an increase of 5.3% compared to 2022 (11.2 billion euros).
The growth in trade is associated with an increase in France's imports of Algerian goods - up to 7.3 billion euros (+ 8%), which are mainly represented by hydrocarbons - 6 billion euros (+ 15.3%):
- natural gas - 3.1 billion euros (+ 30.1%);
- crude oil - 2.9 billion euros (+ 5.6%).
French exports to Algeria shrank 0.5% to €4.49 billion in 2023, down from €4.51 billion in 2022. Grain sales, which have been the main item of French agroexport to Algeria since 2003, have decreased 5 times from 834 million euros in 2022 to 166 million euros in 2023.
Supplies of French industrial products to Algeria in 2023 increased by 20.5% compared to 2022 and amounted to 1.9 billion euros. Mechanical equipment in 2023 was delivered by 1 billion euros, which is + 16.9% more than in 2022 (863 million euros).
At the same time, the trade deficit between France and Algeria in 2023 amounted to 2.8 billion euros (+ 33.3%) compared to 2022 - 2.1 billion euros.
Deficit in trade with Morocco with its growth to 14 billion euros
Morocco's trade surplus with France reached nearly €690 million in 2023. The trade turnover between Morocco and France recorded record figures, exceeding 14 billion euros. The growth of mutual trade amounted to 5% compared to 2022, when trade also increased significantly (+ 25%).
Bilateral trade at this time is twice the level of 2015. While Morocco's overall trade balance is traditionally scarce (due to its heavy reliance on energy imports), trade with France shows a steady surplus.
Morocco's key exports to France are agricultural products (+ 16%) and automotive products (+ 5%). The main imports are transport equipment (+ 58%), chemical products and pharmaceuticals (+ 10%), wheat, the volume of import of which into Morocco amounted to 2.3 million tons.
Products of the automotive industry as a whole are one of the main items of Moroccan exports abroad, despite the fact that France accounts for more than 40% of these supplies.
