Hip fracture

A hip fracture is a severe injury that threatens people's lives, especially during the winter months.

Self-height fall trauma, also called low-energy, is an increasingly common problem among older patients. This is due to the aging population, as well as the fact that many older people lead a more active lifestyle.

According to 2019 data, up to 4.5 million people suffer from a hip fracture in the world.

A study conducted by the Federal State Budgetary Institution "Center for Expertise and Quality Control of Medical Care" in 2020 showed that the real number of patients with a femoral neck fracture in Russia almost doubles the literature. Every year, about 238 thousand Russians over 60 years of age face this injury, but more than half of them do not receive the necessary medical care[1]

What is the danger of a fracture

For a fracture, even a fall from the height of your own growth is enough. A particular danger is that when the neck of the femur fractures, not only the bone is damaged, but also the vessels rupture, and the bone fragment (the head and part of the neck of the femur), deprived of blood supply, can dissipate, gradually disappear. A fracture of the hip neck in old age may not grow at all.

Undoubtedly, such a pathological condition leads to a decrease in immunity, the development of inflammation at the site of injury, as well as an exacerbation of existing chronic diseases. That is why this injury is so dangerous, despite the fact that it occurs quite often.

Consequences of a fracture

According to 2019 data, mortality among patients with hip fracture can reach up to 10% during the first month, and up to 36% during the year. Among survivors, 11% remain bedridden, 16% need long-term rehabilitation in the hospital, and 80% even a year after the fracture use walking aids. It is worth considering that most of the patients who break the hip neck are elderly people.

"Statistics
show that the colossal mortality due to hip fracture is comparable to mortality from cardiovascular diseases, which we often call killer No. 1," said Olga Tkacheva, director of the Russian Gerontological Research and Clinical Center, chief freelance geriatrician of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation in 2020. "However, compliance with the" gold standard, "surgical treatment within 48 hours after injury is a solution to the problem that will reduce mortality by more than half
."

The problem is becoming more and more serious and, although formally the assistance system exists, for 2020 it works quite weakly. A large number of patients do not get treatment at all to orthopedic traumatologists, they are not operated on, respectively, they are disabled and ultimately die.
