2022: Due to wars, violence and natural disasters, a record 71.1 million people in the world were forced to move within their countries
On May 11, 2023, the Center for Monitoring Internal Movements (IDMC) published an annual report on the migration of citizens within their countries. It is reported that in 2022, due to wars, violence and natural disasters, a record 71.1 million people were forced to change their place of residence within the state. This is 20% more than the previous year.
The document says that in 2022, the number of movements of people in search of shelter or safe regions to live turned out to be unprecedentedly high. An indicator of 60.9 million people was recorded, which is 60% more on an annualized basis. Often people were forced to change their place of residence several times during the year. In this mass, 28.3 million citizens moved within their countries due to violence and conflicts: this is three times the average annual figure for the last decade (by the end of 2022). Another 32.6 million people moved due to natural disasters and natural disasters - an increase on an annualized basis was recorded at almost 40%.
The observed increase in internal movements is partly due to the current geopolitical situation. The conflicts have undermined years of progress made to combat global hunger and malnutrition. In addition, the situation is aggravated by the deterioration of the environmental situation and climate change. Among the most serious natural disasters in 2022 are floods in Pakistan and Typhoon Noru in the Philippines.
We are seeing a continuing trend of unprecedented disasters resulting in significant loss of life, destruction and new scale of displacement. Building up common efforts to combat climate change and investing in safe, regular and orderly migration routes is more important than ever, "said Antonio Vitorino, Director General of the International Organization for Migration[1] |
