2024: The volume of online trade in Moscow for the year increased by 38.5% and reached 1.55 trillion rubles
At the end of 2024, the volume of the Internet trade market in Moscow reached 1.55 trillion rubles. This is 38.5% more compared to 2023, when expenses in the relevant sector were estimated at 1.12 trillion rubles. Such data were published on February 18, 2025 by the Association of Internet Trading Companies (AKIT).
According to estimates, in 2024, the Internet trading sector in Russia as a whole provided revenue of almost 9 trillion rubles with an increase of 41% on an annualized basis. Moscow leads in regional terms: the Russian capital accounted for 17.3% of the amount of all online purchases in 2024 against 17.7% a year earlier. Another approximately 8.5% was the share of the Moscow region (9.2% in 2023).
In 2024, Muscovites spent the most money on the Internet on food (delivery from stores and ready-made food from catering) - 398 billion rubles, which is almost 26% of the total online purchases in the Russian capital. For this commodity category, this is a record figure among all regions of the Russian Federation. Food products also came out on top in Internet sales in Russia as a whole, but their share nationwide is significantly lower - 16.9%.
In second place in terms of online sales in Moscow are household goods and furniture with an indicator of 210 billion rubles, which corresponds to 13.8%. This is followed by clothing and shoes with 201 billion rubles (a share of 13.3%), as well as electronics and household appliances with 170 billion rubles (11.2%). In fifth place in the list of the most popular goods among residents of the capital are auto parts and auto accessories - 90.5 billion rubles, or 6%. Significant shares in total sales were also demonstrated by beauty and health products with 5.4%, tools with 4% and products for children with 3%. The share of online trade in the total volume of retail sales in Moscow for the year increased by 3.8%: as of the end of 2024, this channel in the capital accounts for 20.8% of all purchases.
As noted by AKIT President Artem Sokolov, Internet trade is becoming an important channel for the purchase of goods for the population, including in those regions where retail is not sufficiently developed. There is an active development of e-commerce in relatively small settlements. Sokolov believes that the tendency to strengthen the role of regions in online trading is becoming more and more visual, as well as the capabilities of e-commerce platforms in terms of providing a huge range of goods for residents of the whole country, regardless of the geography of their residence. Against this background, the contribution of Moscow and the Moscow region to the total volume of the Internet trade market is decreasing. The activity of Internet trading companies themselves, the development of logistics infrastructure, as well as the establishment of effective partnerships play an important role in expanding the industry.
Our forecast values for the growth of online trade volumes were confirmed, and given the active expansion of retail, both retail chains and Internet trading companies into the regions of the country, the same dynamics will continue this year [2025]. The regional market, in fact, has just begun to develop, - emphasizes Sokolov. |
According to Infoline Analytics, in 2024, the share of multi-category marketplaces increased by 6.6% and exceeded 66% of the total volume of online commerce. The combined share of the ten largest players in the online sales market was more than 81%. As the head of the e-commerce council of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry Alexei Fedorov notes, the key role in the development of the market is played by Marketplaces.
The buyer stopped looking for goods on the Internet, he immediately goes to the applications already installed on the phones, - emphasizes Fedorov.[1] |

2020: Moscow will reimburse business for 50% of online trading costs
On April 28, 2020, information was published on the official portal of the mayor and the government of Moscow that part of the costs of online trading in small and medium-sized businesses would be reimbursed from the city budget.
Entrepreneurs will be able to calculate a subsidy for compensation up to 50% of the commission of the Internet site, where information about goods and services is posted. The maximum amount of the subsidy is 700 thousand rubles.
Previously, businessmen could receive a subsidy only if placed on sites that take a commission of up to 20% of the cost of goods. At the end of April, the subsidy became available to suppliers of marketplaces and food delivery services from the approved list, regardless of the size of the placement fee.
If the commission exceeds 20%, the subsidy for business will be calculated based on a rate of 20%, and the amount of payment will be 10% of the cost of products, according to a statement on the website of the Moscow mayor's office.
The subsidy was approved on March 31 and was included in the second package of business support measures in Moscow. On April 17, the list of approved Internet sites whose services for the placement of goods and services can be compensated for with subsidies was expanded.
We are interested in making our support tool as popular as possible, so we promptly adjusted the conditions for providing a subsidy so that the support measure we approved would be an accessible tool for everyone and the maximum number of SMEs could use it, "said Alexei Fursin, head of the Department of Entrepreneurship and Innovative Development of the city of Moscow. |
According to him, the ability to partially compensate for the costs of online promotion of their products in the context of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic is important for all representatives of small and medium-sized businesses - regardless of the size of the commission of their partners.[2]
