Russian Post begins to use heavy drones to deliver parcels
At the end of May 2021, it became known about a new experiment by the Russian Post on the use of heavy unmanned aerial vehicles for the delivery of parcels. The pilot project will be held in four regions of the Russian Federation, said the general director of the company Maxim Akimov.
In a conversation with RBC, he noted that the Russian Post intends to use not simple quadcopters, but heavy equipment with a carrying capacity of 50-150 kg and a flight range of 300-400 kg. Akimov also said that the drones that the Russian Post intends to use in the experiment will be able to fly in places without the Internet, using only a direct radio channel.
| For us, this is a very necessary and economically justified thing. We see in the model that when scaling for a certain number of years, we will recoup our investments in the service of our partner or partners, "said Maxim Akimov. |
The head of the Russian Post believes that drones will be able to replace postmen in the future, but by the end of May 2021, the company has not yet decided whether it is ready to create its own drones or use partner products.
| Because if you imagine that a person climbs into the mountains, walks in intolerable conditions in 40 degrees below zero, then you change the idea, you understand that even 5 km is a feat. It's a feat these people do on a daily basis. And there is not 5 km, there are 30 and 50, - he added. |
In addition to UAVs, Russian Post is also testing Yandex robots for parcel delivery. So far, this is also an experiment, after which a decision will be made on the prospects for their use in the urban environment.
As RBC notes, earlier Russian Post has already conducted pilot launches of drones. In particular, it was planned to test UAVs in places with poor communication, swamps, strong winds and different temperatures. At the end of May 2021, Maxim Akimov explained that now "a longer experiment will be carried out on a simply industrial basis."[1]
