Russian Post begins to use heavy drones to deliver parcels

At the end of May 2021, it became known about the new experiment of the Russian Post on the use of heavy unmanned aerial vehicles for the delivery of parcels. The pilot project will be carried out in four regions of the Russian Federation, said company CEO Maxim Akimov.

In a conversation with RBC, he noted that the Russian Post intends to use not simple quadrocopters, but heavy equipment with a carrying capacity of 50-150 kg and a flight range of 300-400 kg. Akimov also said that drones that Russian Post intends to use in the experiment will be able to fly in places where there is no Internet, using only a direct radio channel.

The head of the Russian Post believes that in the future drones will be able to replace postmen, but by the end of May 2021 the company has not yet decided whether it is ready to create its own drones or use the products of partners.

In addition to UAVs, Russian Post is also testing Yandex robots for delivery of parcels. So far, this is also an experiment, after which a decision will be made on the prospects for their use in the urban environment.

According to RBC, earlier the Russian Post has already conducted pilot launches of drones. In particular, it was planned to test UAVs in places with poor communication, swamps, strong winds and different temperatures. At the end of May 2021, Maxim Akimov explained that now "a longer experiment will be carried out on a simple industrial basis."[1]
