2023: Science in Moscow in figures: 47.6 thousand researchers, 20.4% of R&D organizations in Russia and expenses of 954.4 billion rubles

At the end of 2023, there were 840 organizations performing research and development in Moscow. For comparison, a year earlier, their number was 825. Thus, an increase of 1.8% was recorded. At the same time, in Russia as a whole, the number of such institutions on an annualized basis decreased from 4195 to 4125, that is, by 1.7%. Every fifth organization performing research and development in the Russian Federation is located in the capital - 20.4%. This is stated in the material of the Institute of Statistical Research and Economics of Knowledge of the Higher School of Economics, published on May 16, 2025.

The number of personnel engaged in research and development in Moscow in 2023 reached 210.49 thousand people against 208.43 thousand a year earlier. The share of the capital in Russia as a whole was recorded at 31.4% (in the Russian Federation there are 670.61 thousand employees in the area under consideration). The structure of research and development personnel in Moscow is comparable to the all-Russian indicators: researchers account for 53.7% (113.02 thousand people), technicians - 9.2% (19.42 thousand employees), support and other personnel - 37.1% (42.46 thousand). In Russia as a whole, these values ​ ​ are 50.5%, 9.3% and 40.2%, respectively.

In Moscow (unlike Russia as a whole), there is an increase in the number of researchers under the age of 39 (inclusive) - up to 47.6 thousand people in 2023. At the same time, their specific weight in the total mass of researchers reached 42.1%. More than half (53.3%) of Moscow scientific personnel, like Russia as a whole (52%), accumulates the entrepreneurial sector; 33.5% - state; 12.8% is the higher education sector.

The study says that Moscow concentrates more than a third of the all-Russian costs of science - 589.3 billion rubles in 2023, which is 5.8% more compared to 2022 (in constant prices). At the same time, the cost of fixed assets of research and development in the capital reached 954.4 billion rubles: per Moscow organization exceeds 1 billion rubles (in Russia as a whole - 692.8 million rubles).[1]
