2022: EU forces smartphone makers back to easily removable batteries
On December 9, 2022, the European Parliament and the European Council announced an agreement to revise the rules on batteries, taking into account technological developments and future problems. 2021: Global smartphone battery sales up 10% for the year
The smartphone battery market reached $8.7 billion in 2021. Such data were presented at the end of March 2022 by researchers at Strategy Analytics.
In 2021, the overall smartphone battery market saw revenue growth of more than 10% compared to the same period in 2020, according to a Strategy Analytics study. As for the share of suppliers, Amperex Technology Ltd (ATL) came out on top with an income share of 42%, followed by LG Energy Solutions at 22% and Samsung SDI at 18%. In 2021, the top three suppliers accounted for almost 82% of revenues in the global smartphone battery market.
Strategy Analytics senior analyst Jeffrey Mathews noted:
The smartphone battery market has seen a steady demand for high-capacity batteries for mid to high-end devices. Penetration of two-cell batteries exceeded 5% thanks to the use of fast charging. We note that rising prices for essential battery materials such as lithium have helped drive up the cost of smartphone batteries. Moreover, the decline in smartphone production due to a shortage of supplies affected the growth in the supply of battery cells. |
Stephen Entwistle, vice president of strategic technology at Strategy Analytics, said that a wider use of high-capacity battery cells is expected in smartphones in the future, due to an increase in the technical characteristics of gadgets. The researchers note that the problems associated with the rising cost of raw materials will continue to affect the battery supplier chain.[1]
