Transportation Management System (TMS) Management system for transport

Part of structure of Supply Chain Management. Such system provides calculation of cost of transportation by different types of transport, aggregates customs costs and data on handling works, traces terms of transportations. One of problems of a system  — at the request of the manager instantly to issue information on where there is a load, what terms of its delivery.

For automation of cargo delivery use the TMS system (Transportation Management System). They allow to plan and control each stage of transportation taking into account specifics of business processes of each company. A system distributes loading of vehicle fleet and also makes optimal delivery routes taking into account a road situation and authorized speed of the movement, the working schedule of points of delivery, a work-rest schedule of the driver. In the automatic mode all documentation forms that reduces quantity of errors and saves time. Besides, a system allows to receive reports on a consumption of fuel and lubricants, cost values of delivery, personnel operating time[1].

A TMS system can include function satellite GPS/ GLONASS- monitoring transport that helps to monitor in real time movement of a load and to predict delivery time.

One more perspective opportunity — use of telematic devices (technology of Internet of Things). Using the sensors installed on the vehicle it is possible to control temperature in a body that is important on delivery perishable products, to analyze technology of driving when transporting fragile loads, to fix opening of doors if especially valuable goods or objects are transported. It allows to increase safety of transportations and to increase their quality.

Mobile solutions within TMS systems allow drivers, to forwarding agents, couriers, sales representatives quickly to obtain necessary information on delivery directly in the tablet or the smartphone. For example, day routes are displayed in the mobile device. If the new point is added, then it is not necessary to think in what order to visit it — a system will add it to a route automatically in the most optimal way. Due to automatic document flow time for a design of delivery in each point is saved.

Trends of development of TMS

According to the leading analyst in the field of logistics of ARC Advisory Group Adrian Gonzalez the following pronounced trends of development in the field of transport logistics are observed today:

  • Increase in popularity of TMS solutions with remote access, in particular from medium business which already insufficiently outdated centralized systems of accounting of transport, but does not have resources for installation of the "heavy" TMS systems with distributed control via the web interface. Practice of Software as a Service (SaaS), quite naturally, in transport logistics is most popular
  • Improvement of analytical and reporting funktsionalnost of TMS. Traditionally, many TMS systems have limited opportunities for reports generation in own interface, exporting data for their creation to the external BI systems, but recently existence of this functionality (generation of commodity and covering notes, customs papers, route sheets, schedules of work of objects and the CU, analytical reports according to the plan fact of shipments itd.) becomes obligatory in TMS
  • Billing modules in TMS systems, with a possibility of reconciliation of the planned cost of transportation and accounts issued by carrier.
  • Integration not only with ERP systems and WMS, but also directly with management systems for demand, for more exact determination of need for vehicles
  • Merge of management systems for own vehicle fleet and optimization of orders of transport at carriers in a uniform TMS system. In most the existing "heavy" TMS of packets these functionality "are divorced" on the 2nd different modules.
  • Adding of the funktsionalnost of planning of giving of transport to gate of a warehouse (Yard & Dock Management) which are traditionally present at the WMS systems
  • Planning of multimodal transportations
  • Support of SOA

Advantages of TMS

The diagram of runs and orders in network before optimization

Advantages of TMS solutions can be seen using modeling of the existing transport company and the scenario analysis "that-if". In the course of modeling and optimization by different criteria it is possible to analyze different scenarios of transportations and to make economically reasoned decision on the best of them. The attention is required also by complexity of TRS (transport distribution network) which considerably prolongs the term of modeling, optimization and cost of the scenario analysis. However practice confirms that it such quickly pays off. The scenario analysis "that-if" works with potential algorithms of maintaining new objects: it allows to include/switch off the existing objects in TRS, to change the diagram and a type of their work and also quickly selects options from potentially set objects.

Such opportunity allows operators of logistics to use effectively resources transport of network taking into account all business restrictions. Besides, by means of the scenario analysis it is possible to reveal potential risks or weak points which can be detected and be traced when modeling of the existing network. The tactical solution makes recommendations about elimination of potential risks: for example, what will occur if the order is not executed in planned time; if the truck arrived to a loading/unloading point  , etc. at an inopportune time. Using TMS solutions such supernumerary or emergencies it is possible to assess and solve in the best way until execution of the transportation schedule.

Advantages of the TMS solution

In conclusion it is possible to list shortly some advantages of the tactical solution TMS which treats:

  • decrease in the transportation costs shown using the scenario analysis "that-if" to the existing TRS before its optimization;
  • identification of weak points in the existing TRS and development of recommendations about their elimination
  • the most rational use of the existing objects of TRS taking into account the imposed business restrictions;
  • improvement of service
  • increase in safety of imported goods
  • transparency of transportations in TRS.
