2020: The authorities of Tanzania agreed to construction of the cableway to Kilimanjaro
On December 19, 2020 the government of Tanzania approved installation of the cableway to Kilimanjaro.
"Permission from the government is got, now we wait for the corresponding instructions from the ministry of natural resources and tourism to start search of investors for the purpose of project implementation", - the assistant to the head of department of national parks of Tanzania Paul Banga said.
He reported that the cableway will be paved from the bottom of Kilimanjaro up to the height of 3,700 m. The general height of the mountain is 5,895 m above sea level.
2019: Plan of carrying out tender for construction of the cableway
In May, 2019 it became known that 50’000 tourists who are annually visiting the highest African Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania seem to the government of this country insufficient. It looks for options how to increase inbound tourism flow on which receipts of foreign currency depend. One of the most real opportunities as specialists found out, is the highway which construction will open opportunities for those who did not get used to be engaged in rock-climbing and mountaineering.
Exact extent of the cableway at this stage is unknown – different options depending on cost and engineering solutions are considered. As for design and construction, not the Tanzanian specialists, and the invited companies from China or Western Europe will be engaged in it (who exactly – will define the tender).
For Tanzania construction of the cableway is first of all the business project, and the profitability will have a key impact on an outcome of competitions. In 2018 tourism revenues of the country were $2.4 billion (against $2.2 billion in 2017, +7%).
'The cableway can increase the number of tourists by 50%, having provided access to the mountain for those who cannot rise by it yet, – the deputy minister of tourism Konstantin to Cañas told Reuters, – Now we carry out the feasibility statement on possible routes to see whether this project is viable. Tanzania – not the first who using the cableway solves a problem of access to almost impassable places cableways is in Sweden, Italy and in the Himalayas'[1]. |
However the profit got by tourism industry from construction of the cableway in Tanzania can create losses for national economy in general, it is subject to consideration. So, couple of tourists at rise to Kilimanjaro employ up to 13 local attendants, including the porter, the guide and the cook. If tourists go on the mountain on the cableway, then 13 mentioned people will not get a job (only between Kilimanjaro and one of nearby mountains about 20,000 porters work).
