2023: Balearic Islands set limit of 16.5m tourists a year
According to the Balearic Islands Regional Government (Ibiza, Mallorca, Menorca, Formentera), 16.5 million tourists a year is the number the islands can accept. This is a restriction set by the government when reorganising the tourism sector on the islands in February 2023.
In 2022, the Balearic Islands received 16,475,579 tourists, no longer the islands can accept. As the government has repeatedly stated, the Balearic Islands should improve the quality of visitors, not their number.
For this, the islands must also improve the quality of supply and services, as well as try to reduce the number of arrivals. The latter is especially in the summer months, when locals and even tourists realize that the islands are oversaturated.
The islands' Minister for Economic Model, Tourism and Labour, said: "We believe it is possible to increase returns with fewer tourists. Despite the theories of those who bet on quantity rather than quality, we are moving in the right direction. "
He then cited a record number of tourists in the Balearic Islands in 2022. Then the islands received the highest tourist expenses in history, as well as the number of crimes increasing with increased attendance of foreign tourists.

Tourism in Spain exceeded pre-pandemic indicators
The tourism sector in Spain fully recovered in 2022, exceeding the figures before the start of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic. This was announced by the Spanish tourism association Exceltur on January 17, 2023.
According to Exceltur, 2022 tourist GDP reached €159 billion in nominal terms, which is 1.4% higher than in 2019. The tourism industry provided 61% of the growth of the Spanish economy in 2022. Exceltur estimated that the industry's contribution to the Spanish economy was 12.2%, up from 12.6% in 2019.
Even taking into account the uncertainty associated with Russia's special military operation in Ukraine and inflation in the EU, for the first time, Spanish hotels, resorts, transport companies, car distributors and entertainment enterprises predict higher cumulative sales than before the COVID-19 pandemic, based on the booking data that they register.
The sector's recovery in 2022 was mixed. For example, although the income of hotels for recreation increased by 7% compared to the level before the COVID-19 pandemic, transport companies still sold 5% less than in 2019. Travel companies were on average able to raise prices by 6.6% in 2022, the study found, although their margins declined due to rising energy costs and higher wages in Spain. The country's tourism industry benefits from an increase in visitors from Central Europe and Mexico.
Exceltur, a group of analysts, said it made its forecast for 2023 based on a survey of about 2,000 businesses through Jan. 5, 2023. In early January 2023, companies are betting that the full return of American and British tourists will contribute to the recovery, not even counting on the return of Asian travelers. If the forecast comes true, the tourism industry will account for about 12.2% of Spain's gross domestic product, according to Exceltur Jose Louis Zoreda 's vice president. However, this will be less than 12.6% in 2019.
The tourism industry is traditionally one of the key in the Spanish economy. Thus, almost 8.9 million foreign guests who visited the kingdom in August 2022 spent €11.26 billion, according to data from the Spanish National Institute of Statistics.[1]
Visitors to Spain are only 200 thousand Russians, 84% less than in 2019.
In 2022, only about 200 thousand Russians visited Spain, which is 84% less than the pre-pandemic 2019 (more than 1.3 million).

The number of Russian tourists in Spain increased by a third
In total, 60.66 million foreign tourists visited the country in 2013, which is 5.6% more than a year earlier. In 2013, the record of 59.2 million foreign guests set in 2007 was also broken. In December 2013, the number of foreign tourists increased by 16.3% and amounted to 3.06 million people.

- 9.5 million French (15.7%).
- The fourth place was taken by guests from Scandinavian countries with an indicator of 4.87 million people.
- The number of tourists from Italy and Portugal has significantly decreased - by 8.1% and 8.5%, respectively.
- The number of Russian tourists in Spain in 2013 increased the most - by 31.6%, according to the Ministry of Industry, power and Tourism. Tourists from Russia took the ninth place in terms of numbers - 1.58 million people. As mentioned earlier, this is 31.6% more than a year earlier. They managed to get ahead of the Irish (1.27 million people) and the Americans (1.19 million)[3].
One in four foreign tourists opted for a visit:
- Catalonia (15.5 million people).
- Behind it are the Balearic Islands (11.1 million),

2012: Russians spend the most
According to the Spanish Ministry of Tourism, Russians leave 47% more money in the country than those coming from other countries.
The average Russian tourist in 2012 in Spain spent 159 euros per day, and the average spending of tourists from other states was 108 euros, British, for example - only 93 euros.
Tourists from Russia most often visited Catalonia and Barcelona. In this region, the number of our compatriots in the summer season of 2012 exceeded the number of tourists from the UK.
"Russians in our city have become the most numerous tourists from abroad. A couple of years ago, it was impossible to even imagine it, "said Benet Presas, municipal tourism adviser to the resort of Salou, on the coast of Costa Dorada.
In total, in 2012, more than 1.2 million tourists from Russia visited Spain. The increase was about 40%. Experts attribute this to the increased number of direct flights between these two countries, the easing of the visa regime, the ability to buy plane tickets online at low prices, the growing desire of Russians to travel, and, moreover, with the Arab revolutions, which is why the countries of North Africa have lost the attractiveness of a significant part of tourists[4].
